This colorful poster of writing ideas perfectly depicts what was described in Chapter 5 of Fletcher and Portalupi. During the 30-40 minute writing time of a Writer's Workshop, there will inevitably be at least one student with a blank paper who can't think of a single thing to write about. This poster provides those students with great writing ideas and topics. It will help students to recall memories they have about birthdays, vacations, friends, animals, recess, boo-boos, and many more that they can then turn into stories, poems, or songs. Fletcher and Portalupi mention several questions to ask students to help them discover writing topics, like whether or not they play sports, what (if anything) do they collect, if they have ever been to the hospital, etc. Posters such as this can serve as a springboard to help students generate topics, especially if they are stuck. Depending on it's size, this poster could be displayed in the Writer's Workshop center or placed in each student's Writing folder, so that they can refer to it at any time. Of course, not all students will need to use a paper like this, but it is very helpful for those who do need it. I will certainly use something like this in my classroom.

How to build a snowman: Could adapt to use of sensory details and clarity in writing assignment before winter break?
This is an activity which breaks down transitions in stories. I think this is something that a lot of children have trouble with and I would use this as a support lesson after turning in a writing assignment and discussing how we could have made stories better with transitioning.

Writing Paragraphs is a hard skill. The stop light method will definitely help my ELLS and lower level kiddos. It also helps to reinforce going until the end of the line and then going onto the next without squishing words where they are hard to read. Could also be used for main idea, supporting details, and conclusion.
