    South Carolina Charleston Benne Cookie recipe. We've been told by a Miss Beck Johnson (of the Sims family) who, as a little girl, spent a lot of time at Foxbank in the early 1900s recalls they used much less benne seed than the modern recipes. Miss Beck still makes these cookies today.

Benne Wafers — The BEST Southern cookies ever! Makes about 50 cookies. Ingredients: 1 c brown sugar, packed, 6 T butter, 1 egg, beaten, ½ c AP flour, ¼ tsp salt, ¼ tsp baking powder, 1 tsp vanilla, 6 T toasted sesame seeds. NOTE: Do not use cooking time as listed - watch carefully, mine were done & perfect at 7 minutes - different time with a dark cookie sheet, different ovens. If sliced ultra thin from a frozen roll, usually done at 5-6 min w/325 oven.
