Chiropractic 101 :: Frequently Asked Questions - This is a great read for those with questions about chiropractic! - The Autonomic Nervous System, which functions as the control system to run the body's organs to maintain our overall functioning. See where these functions originate and lead to within the spine. This also corresponds to injury and some symptom occurrence.
"The nerves branch off the spinal cord and exit from in between the bones of your spine and further subdivide until they connect with every cell in your body. Now when you consider you have some 6000 billion cells in the body...that's a lot of nerves." This is why I see a Chiropractor. If your brain can not send uninterrupted messages through our spinal cord because our vertebra is out of alignment and putting painful pressure on the spinal cord how can we expect our body to be healthy?
Our autonomic nervous system helps regulate our organs
Spine, nerves, organ connections.
According to The Association of Chiropractic Colleges, “chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.” You’ll notice that it doesn’t say “chiropractic is cracking and popping bones in your back to make the pain go away.” This seems to be the biggest misconception in the public. But there is much more to it. In fact, the first chiropractic adjustment was not meant to relieve pain but restore function which in turn enabled a man to regain his hearing. Our bodies are full of nerves which originate from our brain stem down the spine and out through openings between the joints of vertebrae. When one of these joints becomes fixated or “stuck” in the wrong position, it loses its normal biomechanical function or its normal way of moving. This can cause irritation of the nerve that branches off and exits the spine at that area, we call this a subluxation. This may cause pain and can also cause dysfunction of the organs, muscles and tissues that the particular nerve goes to. Chiropractors make corrections to these vertebra using specific and precise adjustments. For instance, most people are familiar with the term sciatica. This is pain from the sciatic nerve that runs down the back of your leg. Many times this can be caused by a subluxation in the lower spine irritating the nerves that make up the larger sciatic nerve. Chiropractic adjustments to correct the specific vertebra that is “stuck” will often relieve the irritation of the nerves addressing the cause of the pain associated with it. This will also improve the nerve flow to the tissue and organ(s), allowing them to function properly as well. So simply put, chiropractic makes corrections to joints that aren’t moving like they are supposed to thus relieving nerve irritation and allowing your body to function to its fullest potential. There is so much more that could be said but I wanted to briefly explain what chiropractors do at its most basic and simplest level. I will go into more detail the more I write. The human body is truly an amazing machine! We are all aware that our bodies have muscles, nerves, fascia, bones etc….. These allow us to move, lift, produce force and get about our daily activities. But when we look a little more closely, we see that the body is a complex system consisting of many different chains. When we injure our self – we can often create a dysfunction or a weakness in a particular chain. This can then go on to create problems with the way we move or perform tasks. These chains that I am talking about are often referred to as slings. Physiotherapist Diane Lee identifies 4 main sling systems within the human body. The top picture is the posterior sling, the middle is the anterior sling and the bottom picture is the lateral sling. The posterior sling is an important one, as we use this sling to drive movement in walking and running. As you can see from the picture below, the glute max muscle works with the opposite lat dorsi muscle during the push off phase of walking or running. This combined contraction counters rotation and produces tension in the fascia joining the two muscles. This allows the system to work like a spring as it stores energy and also stabilises the sacroliliac joint (the back on the pelvis). It’s very clever! Sometimes people who have sustained injury to the hip, back or shoulder will need to retrain these muscles as a system in order to return to full function – particularly if they are keen to get back into running. This is just one of many examples of how the body works in this way. Pilates is a great way to retrain dysfunction within all sling systems to allow efficient movement and peak performance.
