My high school English teacher secretly let us watch, Dead Poets Society and it awakened every student in the room. This teacher was one of the best I've ever had, because he was genuinely passionate about teaching, learning and growing as a human. He didn't show us this movie to rebel against anyone, but yet to expand our minds and open us to the world could be.

This is a way for kids to find synonyms for some overused words using paint strip samples. I think this is a way to utilize universal design because it is not only educating kids on synonyms but it is portrayed in a way that is appealing to visual learners as well as auditory learners. Having the paint strips is a visual that is easy for students to grasp and art can be utilized in language arts teaching.

'synonym rolls'! each student could have a word and they can write the synonyms around the roll. Can easily put up on a bulletin board.
This is a really cute idea and way for students to remember the name for a synonym [kids love cinnamon rolls] and how to remember them! "synonym" rolls -- Dani Khoury
Synonyms Rolls - practice synonyms with paper synonym rolls then give each student an edible cinnamon roll and write an adjective to describe the roll. Then write synonyms for the adjective.
Got this idea from another pinner. This is what I did- I googled a cinnamon roll image from the Internet, blew the image up, and assigned the students one commonly used word in 5th grade writing. They used thesauruses to fill in all their Synonyms on their synonym rolls. They loved it. Next time I do it, I will display them in the foil trays, I like that look.
"I did this as an interactive bulletin board in our hallway. The kids loved it! I would check it every couple of days and if I noticed some wrong synonyms, I'd rerun through my mini lesson and have a student correct it."
Synonym rolls: You pass out cinnamon roll shapes to your students (or they make their own depending on grade level), and they put in the middle a “boring” word. Then, on the spiral around the synonym roll, they write synonyms they could use to replace it. Personally, I would laminate these, keep them in a roll pan or file to let students sift through them while trying to write.
Students can create these "synonym rolls" which will help them understand what a synonym is. It is also good way to come up with different adjectives they can use when writing. 5.L.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. (Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms, homographs) to better understand each of the words.)
