"Three Cups of Tea : One Man's Mission to Promote Peace -- One School at a Time" - by Greg Mortenson - This book traces how the author, having been rescued and resuscitated by Himalayan villagers after a failed attempt to climb K2, worked to build schools that would benefit the young girls who were forbidden an education by Taliban restrictions.
This is the most amazing, inspirational book I have ever read

Jarrah Jungle book review: September Book Club read - The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I give it 3 stars out of 5.
The Joy Luck Club - In 1949 four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, begin meeting to eat dim sum, play mahjong, and talk. United in shared unspeakable loss and hope, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Rather than sink into tragedy, they choose to gather to raise their spirits and money.

Alice Blackwell's husband becomes president of the United States. Their time in the White House proves to be heady, tumultuous, and controversial. But it is Alice's own story - that of a kind, bookish, only child born in the 1940s Midwest who comes to inhabit a life of dizzying wealth and power - that is itself remarkable.
Curtis Sittenfeld - American Wife "Two years ago, however, Sittenfeld published a novel, American Wife, which is easily one of the best books written so far this century. It is honest, wonderful and smart as hell, the kind of book that you try to eke out to make it last as long as possible (none of which are qualities that anyone would ascribe to the Bush presidency). A fictionalised account of the life of Laura Bush, whom she calls Alice Blackwell"

My favorite book of all time!
The Help, By Kathryn Stockett is a book laden with symbolism. Even the title has a double meaning. I recommend going to Schmoop.com and looking at the questions for critical review and self-analysis. It would make, (and has made) a great book club discussion book since 2009 when it was written. In my opinion, it was a very good book, well-written, but I didn't think it was very deep. The subject matter was not enjoyable. I felt it is worthy of deeper discussion, rather than just surface issues.
If people haven't seen the film, well worth reading the book first. As is the case with most books-to-films
The Help - Kathryn Stockett I know, I know... it seems as if most people have read this by now. Is the book better than the film? In my opinion, YES. I suppose if you hadn't read the book, and watched the movie first, you'd be none the wiser. As always though, the book provides so many wonderful little extras the film couldn't fit in to the final edit and is a joy to read.
Haunting, it doesn't seem quite the right word but if you read it, it is

One Day. Well worth reading. Do not watch the film. Anne Hathaway cannot do an English accent.
David Nicholls - One Day. One of my favourite books. Not sure if I'm as big a fan of the movie!

WHEN GOD WAS A RABBIT is an incredibly exciting debut from an extraordinary new voice in fiction. Spanning four decades, from 1968 onwards, this is the story of a fabulous but flawed family and the slew of ordinary and extraordinary incidents that shape their everyday lives. It is a story about childhood and growing up, loss of innocence, eccentricity, familial ties and friendships, love and life. Stripped down to its bare bones, it's about the unbreakable bond between a brother and sister.

“He uncovered in us a curious need: that we each secretly wanted him to remember us the most. It was strange, both vital & flawed, until I realised that maybe the need to be remembered is stronger than the need to remember.” When God was a Rabbit ~ Sarah Winman. Pinner writes: "Mesmerising portrait of loss of innocence, eccentricity & the unbreakable bond between brother & sister. Emotional roller-coaster read with hilarious anecdotes of childhood mixed in with chilling truths about growing up."

Life of Pi, by Yann Martel Possessing encyclopedia-like intelligence, unusual zookeeper’s son Pi Patel sets sail for America, but when the ship sinks, he escapes on a life boat and is lost at sea with a dwindling number of animals until only he and a hungry Bengal tiger remain. One of my favorite books, but found out it is based on Moacyr Scliar’s book “Max and the Cats.” Must read this book now.

book cover of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, book 1) by Stieg Larsson
Came to this about a year after everyone else and not entirely sure what all the hype is about. It's a good solid crime novel, I really enjoyed the storyline about corrupt financial institutions & I thought the characters (especially Lisbeth) were convincing and interesting. However I didn't think it was so much better than many other good crime books (and doesn't even come close to Child 44) I did let out a whoop when Lisbeth got her revenge on the bastard autocrat who raped her.
This is my favorite book of the past 10 years. The Millennium series is actually my favorite books of all time. This book came along when I really didn't really know what to read anymore. I was looking for something and just didn't know what exactly it was. Lisbeth is one of my favorite characters of all time and I adore the chemistry between her and Blomkvist. I have read it several times and just cant get enough of it. #ThriftbooksTop10

Bookshelves built into the stairs- fantastic space saving idea
Library with a stair. Amazing idea for small places. Home #library
Took me a minute or two to figure this photo out, but I finally realized the image is taken from the upper landing looking down the stairs. Creative use of space to store movies (in the stair risers) and books (in bookshelves on the stairway walls).
"London-based Levitate Architects came up with this ingenious solution to a book storage problem and created a loft-like bedroom nestled under the roof of the top-floor apartment. Here is what Levitate's Tim Sloan had to say about the project: The flat occupies part of the shared top floor of an existing Victorian mansion block. Our proposal extended the flat into the unused loft space above, creating a new bedroom level and increasing the floor area of the flat by approximately one third. We created a 'secret' staircase, hidden from the main reception room, to access a new loft bedroom lit by roof lights. Limited by space, we melded the idea of a staircase with our client's desire for a library to form a library staircase in which English oak stair treads and shelves are both completely lined with books. With a skylight above lighting the staircase, it becomes the perfect place to stop and browse a tome. The stair structure was designed as an upside down 'sedan chair' structure (with Rodrigues Associates, Structural Engineers, London) that carries the whole weight of the stair and books back to the main structural walls of the building. It dangles from the upper floor thereby avoiding any complicated neighbour issues with the floors below."

Extraordinary love story of Clare and Henry who met when Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty. Impossible but true, because Henry suffers from a rare condition where his genetic clock periodically resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. In the face of this force they can neither prevent nor control, Henry and Clare's struggle to lead normal lives is both intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.
