Raised garden beds: hugelkultur instead of irrigation

New concept - raised garden beds hugelkultur. Nothing more than a raised garden bed filled with rotted wood. This makes a garden bed loaded with organic material, nutrients, air pockets for roots, etc. Gets even better as time goes on.

Some really interesting ideas You can never pin too much info on Hugelkulture. I slready have my test bed started. Hopefully I get good results next year. One of the bad things about living so far North, the growing season is never long enough.

Hügelkultur Bed. Hügelkultur is a raised plant bed built over decaying wood and compostable materials. A fallen tree becomes a “nurse log”, decomposing, releasing nutrients, and nourishing new growth above for years, even decades. As the wood decays, it becomes more porous, storing water like a giant sponge, and releasing it slowly back into the bed’s soil. This means less plant watering; some gardeners report their beds thrived all season from rainfall alone.

Hugelkultur raised garden beds in a nutshell: Grow a typical garden without irrigation or fertilization. Has been demonstrated to work in deserts as well as backyards. Use up rotting wood, twigs, branches and even whole trees that would otherwise go to the dump or be burned. It is pretty much nothing more than buried wood. Can be flush with the ground, although raised garden beds are typically better. Can always be small - although bigger is better.

Hugelkultur is making raised garden beds filled with rotten wood. Will try this in my raised patio planters to use up all that rotting wood and fill the space.
