I don't teach math (thank goodness for students), but this seems helpful for those pesky word problems.
This is a cute anchor chart that shows the acronym "CUBES." This acronym is a good way to remind students of the steps to take when they are solving word problems. This site has many other helpful math anchor charts. *
test taking/word problem strategies- this is an essential part of responsibility when reading story problems!
This 5-step graphic is perfect to hang in a math classroom for students who struggle with word problems. Key steps of circling the important numbers, underlining the actual questions, boxing in the action, evaluating the problem, and then solving and checking it can help those students who look at the word problem and don't see what they should do. Once they read and break up these steps, it will be easier for them to comprehend what they need to do and how to solve the problem.

We finished up angles the other day, and I thought I would share the anchor chart we used and a couple of activities we did. This particular group is a group of 4th grade Talented and Gifted kids, so we did a quick, quick review! I used my Interactive Math Journal resource from the brilliant and wonderful Runde's Room! Seriously, the Math Journal is one of the best purchases I've ever made on TpT! The kids made her foldable while I made the anchor chart (apparently, we need to work on the spelling of "straight") Types of Angles Foldable Types of Angles and Measuring Angles Anchor Chart When we finished the foldable and review of the types of angles, we talked about measuring angles and made a little chart to describe the steps of measuring angles. We talked about labeling angles as well (you can see our little labeled triangle up in the right hand corner of the anchor chart). Then, the kids made a shape on the left side of their math journals and started labeling and measuring angles... It was a really neat way to have them "prove" their thinking without having to do a worksheet. The students drew their own shapes then identified angles (and types of line) and practiced measuring angles. Finally, I created a set of angles task cards that they all worked on in rotations (along with IXL.com). Typically I work with these kids on 5th grade standards, but in this case, they needed a lot of review of the 4th grade standards, so the task cards were a perfect way to accomplish this. I made the cards so that they fulfilled all of the angle standards and it worked GREAT for review! You can buy the angle task cards here. Angle Task Cards Over the next few days we are tackling classifying polygons and looking at quadrilaterals!

I love great math ideas. Here's an easy center to make, it just requires sharpies, a plastic bag, some patience and old water bottle lids (yay upcycling!) This center can easily be differentiated for any grade level depending on the operations that are used. For fifth grade, I would use parentheses and all operations signs. This would be great for making algebraic expressions, practicing multiplication and division, finding unknown values and using decimals to show place value. Students could easily bring in lids to help you collect the supplies. With the Common Core, fifth graders have to review geometric shapes and classify them into a hierarchy. This is a great example of an anchor chart that could help students: Before we go into 3D shapes, I would review 2D shapes on the geoboard. Most classes have a set of the old plastic boards and rubber bands, but there is a great free app on the iPad that allows students to virtually manipulate geoboards. As a bonus, you can expand the board from the traditional 5x5 to a much larger 10x10 board, allowing for more room to make shapes. This app could be used as a formative assessment where you call out a shape (ex, right scalene triangle) and students make one to show you. Plus, there are different colored rubber band options with the app :) This is a great freebie I found on another teacher's blog: I've used it in my classroom and it's a great center to review number sense. You can also use cups to review place value: For a review of area and perimeter, you can use graph paper, markers and dice for this easy game of war. Students roll the dice, then create the corresponding array. Students must strategically place their array on the grid and try to stump their partner. I like that this is a nice model of how repeated addition and multiplication are the same. This can easily be differentiated for lower grades by having students add the dice rather than multiply them. This is another great (priced) TpT center that my students enjoy: Plus, it's pink and polka-dotted! Grab yours here for a buck! Happy math time!

Two blog posts in the same month--WHOA! What is going on?! ;) So one main thing we have been learning about in my classroom lately has been MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. We have been looking at money for a few weeks now, studying the features of each coin and its value: Here is a money chart I made with a previous class: We have also done many activities to make equivalent sets of coins: I have some kids that can count coin collections by 2s, 5s, 10s, 20s--and then I have kids who cannot point out a nickel. With such a wide range of knowledge, I have to make sure that I have good, quality activities that meet the needs of all levels of my learners. Since I teach math in small groups, I am able to easily differentiate for the different levels. In the Math with Technology station, my students have been playing these games: Here are our FAVORITE money videos to watch: And today I created this fun little station activity to use next week!! In SWAP!, students will match cards that have the same value. There are 5 sets of cards that include 3 levels of play. *BONUS* Each set of cards also includes a QR code version! Check out SWAP! here: And since St. Patty's Day is coming up, now is a good time to check out this fun, little activity: It is part of this pack, which includes MORE money activities: Adios! :)
