Staircase in Western State Hospital. Called Western State Lunatic Asylum in its early years, it was a hospital for the mentally ill in Staunton, Virginia, which admitted its first patient on July 24, 1828. This building was vacated in the 1970s & is being turned into condos.
Hudson River State Hospital - A Former NY State psychiatric hospital that operated from 1873 until 2003. It's well-known for its high Victorian Gothic architecture, being the first American institutional building to exhibit the styling. There are many buildings on the grounds, including a Rec center, an examination building, housing for the criminally insane, Churches, a power house, a morgue, a main building & of course patient housing/rooming. The land is currently owned, but for sale.
