This is NOT a lightening tornado! It's the eruption of Chile’s Chaitén volcano. The plume of ash is thought to generate enough static electricity to cause what is called a “dirty thunderstorm” in the same way that colliding ice particles provide the juice for regular thunderstorms. Scary but beautiful at the same. #nature #science #inspiration #storm

Lightning bolts appear above and around the Chaiten volcano as it began its first eruption in thousands of years, in southern Chile May 2, 2008. Cases of electrical storms breaking out directly above erupting volcanoes are well documented, although scientists differ on what causes them. Picture taken May 2, 2008. Supposedly "Tornado at Rome, GA March 2012" but this looks more like a lightning storm encountering a volcano...?

"Lightning in a Tornado". An excellent example of the stupidity of the Internet. This is a cloud of volcanic ash and some lightning. Specifically, the eruption of Chile’s Chaitén volcano. It took two years for the popular picture of a volcano to become a popular picture of a 'tornado'.

Chile's Chaitin volcano (pictured on May 3, 2008) erupting with lava, ash, and lightning. (Despite what most of Pintrest seems to think lately, this picture is *not* a tornado from March 2012!)

Often noted as F4 Tornado taken in Rome, Georgia. Also referenced as: May 6, 2008 in Chile due to a volcano eruption. After 9,000 years of silence, Chile's Chaitin Volcano (pictured on May 3) is erupting with lava and ashand lightning. Since the volcano awoke on May 2, it has continued erupting intermittently, blanketing the area in ash and forcing more than 4,000 people to flee. Volcanic lightning can be due to a storm during eruption --possibly having to do electric charge separations.
