Buttermilk was Dale Evans' registered quarter horse. He was also a champion cow pony. In the quarter mile, he could beat Trigger in a race. Dale Evans was originally going to ride a palomino but producers felt that having both Roy and Dale on similar horses would be too confusing for viewers.
