Mothership over Montana: Surreal Supercell Stormcloud. Nat Geo photgrapher Sean Heavey. "Seriously: is anything more ominous-and-uplifting-and-scientifically-fascinating than a thunderstorm?" -Jessica Palmer

  • Chim Stewart

Photographer Sean R. Heavey captured this photo of a supercell thunderstorm at sunset in Montana in July 2010. It is a thunderstorm cloud called a supercell. Such colossal storm systems center on mesocyclones -- rotating updrafts that can span several kilometers and deliver torrential rain and high winds including tornadoes. The above supercell cloud was photographed in July west of Glasgow, Montana, USA, caused minor damage, and lasted several hours before moving on.

Montana--did my public health internship in Helena (a gazillion years ago) and remember driving home toward Michigan by myself along roads like these. Amazing feeling!

I once drove into a storm like this, the tempreture dropped 30 degrees in a matter of minutes and the wind changed directions! Not something I want to do again!
