*Sund, Norway* "The Lake House" |Photographer ~ ~Fabrizio Fenoglio~ August 12 2011| |Quote from the photographer: "Sund is a small village in the Lofoten islands. I spent very short time here but when I stopped my car on the hill just over the village I spot this beautiful corner with the characteristic red houses and some boats. The air was crisp and the sea very flat with marvelous reflections on it."|

observe killer whales. The number of sightings in some areas has recently declined, but not in the magical Lofoten islands, an archipelago above the Arctic Circle. Their nutrient-rich and deep waters mean that you are sure of a sighting – and you'll need to travel just six nautical miles offshore, a one-hour boat trip. Late October to mid-January is the time to go, when the whales follow shoals of Atlantic herring (there is also the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights).
