Tasting the rainbow: The saying 'you are what you eat' is true for these insects as stunning pictures show their abdomens changing color as they sip on sugar drops. Father of three Mohamed Babu set up the photographs after his wife showed him some ants had turned white after drinking spilled milk. He gave the creatures the brightly colored sugar drops & watched as their transparent stomachs matched the food they were eating.

Did you know there are some ants that have transparent stomachs? I didn’t. How random is that? Dr. Mohamed Babu, from India, collected some of these ants and fed them food color infused drops of sugar water. Do you know what happened? You guessed it… Rainbow colored ants appeared. What’s even cooler than that is some of the ants drank from more than one drop of colored water, so their stomachs had the effect of mixed colors, creating an even more interesting visual.

"Mohamed Babu, from India, captured these amazing pictures last year after his wife noticed that ants turned white when they drank milk. He dissolved sugar in food colouring solutions of red, green, blue and yellow and then placed them in his garden to attract ants. Some of them even moved between the different solutions, resulting in psychedelic color combinations." Too Cool!!!

Rainbow Ants! "Scientist Mohamed Babu from Mysore, India captured beautiful photos of these translucent ants eating a specially colored liquid sugar. Some of the ants would even move between the food resulting in new color combinations in their stomachs."

Experiment with sugar and water to see what colors ants prefer - and look at their bellies. You can see what color of sugar water they are drinking.
