TRAINSPOTTING>>novel by Scottish writer Irvine Welsh >>film based on it, Trainspotting (1996), directed by Danny Boyle.
The debut novel by the great contemporary Scottish writer Welsh. I have to admit that I didn't read this one until after the movie, but I loved his style so much that I picked up the rest of his work and burned right through it.
The demotic street language is less a barrier, once you've overcome it, than an enhancement to this gripping, horrific, hilarious cycle of stories about addiction in Embra in the 1980s.

I studied Trainspotting as part of my Gender and Cultural Studies unit at university. I loved it then and still love it now though more for its use of phonetics to capture the Scottish dialects than for its depiction of heroin addiction. I recently saw the play, which you can read about in my blog by following the link.
Honestly, there are some chapters of this book that should be read aloud. Some of it is written phonetically in dialect, and it was hard for me to understand until I heard myself say it. Some characters were combined for the film, and others eliminated altogether. Some of the best bits from the book weren't anywhere near the film, including the vignette defining the title. Side note: an episode of "Chuggington" featured trains that PEOPLESPOTTED...I almost died laughing!!!
Love this... Although the c word features alot more in my vocabulary when reading this 😱
Irvine Welsh shocks readers as he takes us into the underworld of Scotland. Great read.
Charles Dickens - Great Expectations
Charles Dickens, Worth Reading, Great Expectations, High School, Books I Ve, Reading List, Favorite Books, Favorite Classic
I was the one who actually loved the books we read in high school...another of my favorite classics.
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I remember reading Great Expectations in high school and hated the long drab story of Pip, without realizing what an affect it had on me. Now I see my low expectation mantra comes from the idea that having great expectations can lead to greater disappointment and unmet expectations. [Gina]
Great Expectations was by far one of my favorite books that I have ever read. It was one of the last books that I read in high school and grew to be one of my favorites. It's a really good book that pulls you in quick, and once you start it's pretty much impossible to quit until you find out what happens with the main character "Pip".
Great Expectations: Charles Dickens - 4 out of 4 stars. Read in March of 2013. Dickens is a genius, and this is the best Dickens book that I have ever read.

Books that shaped America
For Whom the Bell Tolls. Ernest Hemingway. First edition, 1940, Charles Scribner’s Sons. War novel. American in the International Brigades is attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. “Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be. But what will happen in all the other days that ever come can depend on what you do today.” (Hemingway). One of my favorite books.
High School, Ernest Hemingway, Civil War, Favorite Book, Books Book, Dust Cover, Hemingway Book
First Hemingway book I read that got me hooked on him. "There is only now and if now is only two days, then two days is your life and everything in it will be in proportion. This is how you live a life in two days. And if you stop complaining and asking for what you will never get, you will have a good life." - Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls
Robert Jordan is fighting with the Republican Army, during the Spanish civil War. He has to blow up a bridge. In the mountain, he will meet love, friendship, hatred and fear. And his fate, in the end. Hemingway's masterpiece. A page turner and a deep exploration of good and evil, of loyalty and betrayal... A great story told by a great master.
True First Edition, First Printing of the book recommended for the 1941 Pulitzer Prize in Literature. The Pillars of the Earth
This is one of my all time favorite books. It's about the building of a cathedral in 12th century England and the people that are involved in the process. Really great historical fiction!
Ken Follett, Books I Ve, Amazing Book, Reading List, Books Books, Favorite Books, Historical Fiction, Good Books, Time Favorite
This book is constantly on my "Books to Read" list. I pinned this from my dear friend, Kat's board, who has it posted as one of her all time favorites... Now, I've definitely got to read it!
This is one of my all-time favorite books. I have not read/seen many novels that use the Middle Ages as a simple and straightforward backdrop to a beautiful story. The history of the time is painted expertly around the characters and emphasizes them without producing the stereotypical images of the time. Love it.
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett Historical fiction...One of my very favorite books :)
One of my all time favorite books!!! I also loved Eye of the Needle by the same author.
About to finish reading this amazing book. Ken Follett is one of the best authors.

READ - Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte One of my favorite novels senior year of HS. Romance, adventure, psychology... it was a great whirlwind.
Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte's only novel, is one of the pinnacles of 19th-century English literature. It's the story of Heathcliff, an orphan who falls in love with a girl above his class, loses her, and devotes the rest of his life to wreaking revenge on her family.
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte - probably my favorite book in high school

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein used to read this to my daughter when she was little, it was awesome!
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. A boy who turns into a TV set and a girl who eats a whale are only two of the characters in a collection of humorous poetry illustrated with the author's own drawings. Poetry | Humor | Grades K-8.
Where the Sidewalk Ends ... I asked for this book when I was 8, I don't know how many times I read it. I think I still have it almost 40 years later. Pretty sure it is on one of our bookshelves.
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein - From the outrageously funny to the quietly affecting -- and touching on everything in between -- here are poems and drawings that illuminate the remarkable world of the well-known folksinger, humorist and creator of The Giving Tree. LOVED this in elementary school.
Where the Sidewalk Ends.... by shel silverstein. One of my all-time favorites to read out loud!
"Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein Poems and drawings that illuminate the remarkable world around the author. The book's poems address many common childhood concerns and also presents purely fanciful stories. These poems can be read during transition times to keep the students quietly listening and to lighten the mood with the funny poems.Students can draw a silly picture and write a poem about it. Some poems interact with the drawings and can beattempted by the students.
shel silverstein-this was my all time favorite book when I was in elementary school

Book Review: 7 – An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess by Jen Hatmaker
Book List Update I am keeping track of the books I read in 2013. You can read about the first two books in this blog post. 3. 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess By: Jen Hatmaker This is the description of 7 from Jen Hatmaker's Blog : 7 is the true story of how Jen (along with her husband and her children to varying degrees) took seven months, identified seven areas of excess, and made seven simple choices to fight back against the modern-day diseases of greed, materialism, and overindulgence. In the spirit of a fast, they pursued a deeply reduced life in order to find a greatly increased God. Click HERE for more info on 7. I heard about this book from an ad in a devotional magazine that I read from Lifeway Publishing. It piqued my interest. I often think that my life is too excessive, that the "stuff" takes over our lives. I know that I devote too much of my time to the things that were discussed in this book. If you decide to read this book, be ready to feel guilty. The author is brutally honest and you will see yourself in her. She is hilarious in her "tell it like is" approach to writing. I recommend this book to anyone that has a heart for others. It will remind you that no matter how poor you think you are that there are others out there that are jealous of what you have. If you are ready to make a change in your excessive lifestyle: read this book!

Life of Pi Yann Martel. A worthy, well-written, creative novel, which was almost universally despised by every member of my book club. Discussion was brief because most did not buy into the fantastical tale.
Elizabeth's lovely review, now posted on the BookerMarks site. Book Review: 2002 Winner: Yann Martel's Life of Pi
#LifeofPi by Yann Martel -- "Life of Pi is a masterful and utterly original novel that is at once the story of a young castaway who faces immeasurable hardships on the high seas, and a meditation on religion, faith, art and life that is as witty as it is profound."
Life of Pi - Yann Martel. Fantasy/religious commentary, literary fiction. A young boy finds himself on a lifeboat, adrift in the ocean with nothing for company but a man-eating tiger.
Life of Pi / Yann Martel ~ Life of Pi is a masterful and utterly original novel that is at once the story of a young castaway who faces immeasurable hardships on the high seas, and a meditation on religion, faith, art and life that is as witty as it is profound. Using the threads of all of our best stories, Yann Martel has woven a glorious spiritual adventure that makes us question what it means to be alive, and to believe.

Memoirs of a Geisha | Arthur Golden | '...an epic tale and a beautiful evoocatioin of a rapidly vanishing world' ~ The Times
Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden. A literary sensation and runaway bestseller, this the confessions of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha. Enter a world where appearances are paramount; a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; women are trained to beguile the most powerful men, and where love is scorned as illusion. It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction.

Too Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee An all time favorite of mine. I don't know why this is an objectionable book. People have to realize when it was written.
“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee. One of my favorite books of all time.

Favorite Books Covers - To Kill a Mockingbird
When Jason and I were first dating, I was shocked to discover that he'd made it through high school without reading some of my favorite books. I gave him To Kill a Mockingbird one Christmas and I took the liberty of writing notes in the margins to be sure he wouldn't miss anything. All this to say, I love to read and I devour classics. At the same time, I totally understand why people shy away from classic literature. Some books just seem to drone on with odd language and references to obscure things of bygone eras. Here's a few that I think are great and would be enjoyed by most... John Steinbeck's East of Eden is one of my all-time favorites. I equate it to a soap opera for intellectuals. It is filled with family relationships, love and scandal but at the same time, it's so eloquently written and philosophical. The movie version starring the very dreamy James Dean is pretty great too. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is hard to put down. I read it on vacation in Hawaii a few years back. Poor Jason had to beg me to anything that wasn't laying in the sun inhaling this book. Don't let the size scare you, it's a quick read. A Farewell to Arms is Hemingway's semi-autobiographical tale of a young American soldier and a British nurse with World War I as the backdrop. It's beautiful in the description of Italian landscapes and in the juxtaposition of romance and war. Little Women is a book I've loved since I was a child. I just reread it this past year and I finally feel like I understood what Jo's choices regarding love. If you've read it, you know what I mean! And there are so many more I want to include! If you enjoyed Laura Ingalls Wilder as a child, you'll probably love Willa Cather as I do. Then there's Jane Austen. Yes, she's a bit archaic, but once you get into her writing you discover that she has a wonderfully sarcastic sense of humor. Many of you might have read Catcher in the Rye in school, I still remember kids in my English class being excited to read it aloud and getting to swear in class! Now I adore all of Sallinger's short stories. What do you love to read? (Images via Good Reads and IMDb)
