A console table for right behind the couch. Place a lamp on it. Drawers for papers from the kids - "in," "out," "file," etc. instead of a shelf? Bins underneath could hold a selection of board games, coffee table books, throw blankets, baby toys, more video game accessories (I KNOW - we have a lot).
