Parking 1930, 1930S, Vintage Photos, 1930 S, New York City
Vertical parking, 1930s. This was an “elevator garage” in Chicago, 33 W. Monroe Street. It held up to 48 cars. Workers simply drove into the elevator car, parked in their sky-high slots, then walked along the fire escape to their offices.
Stack car parking in New York City, New York, 1930. (Have not found definitive answer whether is this photo is New York or Chicago, 1920s or 1930s.)
Car elevator in the Loop during in 1936. But where is the exact location of the building? We suspect that this car elevator was at 35 E. Wacker, which had a car elevator system until World War II. The parking garage at 35 E. Wacker still has remnants of the car elevator inside. Workers simply drove into the elevator car, parked in their sky-high slots, then walked along the fire escape to their offices.

Saul Leiter (born 1923) is an American photographer and painter whose early work in the 1940s and 1950s was an important contribution to what came to be recognized as The New York School. His abstracted forms and radically innovative compositions have a painterly quality that stands out among the work of his contemporaries. Martin Harrison said, "He sought out moments of quiet humanity in the Manhattan maelstrom, forging a unique urban pastoral from the most unlikely of circumstances."
