Clint's sweet and adorable cousin, Lexi was recently in an accident. She was hit by a car on her longboard and the doctors basically gave her a 1% chance at life. It was a scary time for her family as well as all of us who care for her and her family. I can not even imagine the heartache her family has gone through, but they have been amazing and a lot of people have come together to support Lexi through their prayers. She is a miracle and has survived, but she will need to go through rehab as she continues to improve each day and recover from her brain injury. Clint's aunt contacted me and wanted me to help her come up with an idea on a quilt that people can sign and give words of encouragement to Lexi. She wanted three inch squares and four different colors for the quilt. So, my head started spinning, like it does when I want to piece a quilt and I came up with the design at the beginning of this post. I wanted to group the colors together. I love how it turned out. Funnest part of this was picking out the fabrics. As you can see above, the fabrics are bright and beautiful and I had a wonderful time piecing this quilt. I used strip piecing methods to make the quilt come together fast. It was really fun. I had to put off quilting for a bit, but I felt that this was a quilt that needed to be finished. I have to tell you though, it was fun to piece again. I do not get to piece as much as I would like.... One of the things that I thought would be fun would be to incorporate this heart drawing. I found out that Lexi would draw this on her friends arms and say - Wear your Heart on your Sleeve - so, I made sure to incorporate that into the quilt top. So, through the magic of technology and freezer paper - I was able to print off this design onto fabric. I had to set the ink, so the design went a little blurry, but I still think it looks amazing. The meaning behind the design is what is important anyway and I really hope that she loves it. I love how the quilt turned out. The top is so bright and cheery. And.... I had to make a cute backing for the quilt as well. Thanks for listening. I hope you like this quilt, it would be a great quilt idea for anyone out there who is having a hard time. If you want to read more about Lexi, you can follow her Facebook page here.
So glad you are done! 70 hours later and a ton of thread later you are finished! Hooray! Here's the quilt in Gwen's (owner of the DJ) own words: "Hello to Judi's fans! Judi asked for my "story" about this quilt. Truth is, I can't remember why I decided to do a Dear Jane. Crazy, right? I had never undertaken such a large project in my quilting history prior to making this commitment, nor had I ever enjoyed applique up to that point. However, the single greatest factor in motivating me to work on and complete this quilt is that Anina provided fabulous block tutorials two days per week so I just followed along. Top that with Kaffe Fassett's colorful fabrics and I had all the stimulation I needed to keep going week after week, from December 2008 to March 2010. 225 blocks and 4,948 little pieces of fabric later, we add Judi's amazing talent and magic to the fray and, well, here we are. I couldn't be happier with the overall result. If you are inclined to do a DJ, just start with one block --- an easy one, maybe the nine-patch --- then move on to the next easiest one. Just keep going. You'll be surprised at how much fun it is. Click here for more inspiration. And the best part about doing the DJ is that I'm now a huge fan of applique. Have you seen Kim McLean's appliqued quilt designs? I'm almost done with Flower Pots. Next???!!!" Isn't this quilt incredible? I love it. However - after spending 70 hours doing stitch in the ditch - I don't think I will be piecing this quilt any time soon - sorry - maybe when the kids are grown and out of the house. It will have to be on my "bucket" list for now. At first I wasn't sure what I was going to do on this quilt, but it hit me "like a ton of bricks" when I started quilting and I decided that each block needed to be individualized because of how much work went into each block. That is why I just did a straight stitch in the sash, it sets off each block perfectly I think. The bottoms of the large triangles were 5 inches - so 4 equal straight lines to set these off. I used a gold metallic thread for these. Quilting around the curves were fun - just a little bit of marking with a purple marker - and some figuring around the corners and there you go - I love it! Probably my most favorite quilting picture I have ever taken! Do you see how the curved border has curved diamonds? I absolutely love it! I enjoyed quilting this DJ, but I am so glad to have it finished! Yay!
OMG I can't breathe. That quilting is stunning!

Something about the colors of this quilt and the slashed solids remind me of the 80s and headbands, hence the name of the quilt. The quilt was actually inspired by this photo I ran across on flickr. I loved the composition of the picture, the colors, and the improv shapes. This quilt ended up taking me outside of my comfort zone. It's really minimalist and modern to me. I'm glad I tried it though and that it was done in time to photograph with my favorite spring blooming tree, which I think is a hawthorne tree. I used kona solids and my favorite lipstick shot cotton to create this baby quilt. It is 41 x 49 before washing. I took my inspiration for the quilting from the backing fabric. It is a great sketchy crosshatch flannel I found at Joanns. It reminds me of Heath, and the aqua is so pretty. I finished the binding by machine using this method again. So quick. I thought the wonky crosshatch quilting would be easy, but it was actually a little tricky to keep the random unevenness, even, if you know what I mean. And creating the wonky grid did take a long, long time. I'm pleasantly surprised with how soft and snuggley the quilt is, given the heavy quilting. Maybe it's the flannel, but it has a great drape to it even with all that thread. I'm going to wash and dry this baby quilt, and then it'll be listed in the shop. Up next, a coordinating doll quilt I made with extra blocks. I'm not sure if I want to quilt it the same way or try something a little more feminine.
