Windsor Castle, Windsor Berkshire This is where I want to live. Maybe not in the castle but in the town of Windsor!!
Windsor Castle was built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Since then it has been much altered and enlarged, but it has always been the main royal residence. It is the largest inhabited castle in the world and the oldest royal residence still in use. - photo from Carmen María's English Blog
Windsor Castle, Windsor Berkshire, I have had the pleasure of attending an academic retreat there. Marvelous!
Windsor Castle is a royal residence at Windsor in the English county of Berkshire. The castle is notable for its long association with the English and later British royal family and also for its architecture. The original castle was built in the 11th century after the Norman invasion by William the Conqueror. Since the time of Henry I, it has been used by succeeding monarchs and is the longest-occupied palace in Europe.

Holy crap, this is like a fairytale. How could a girl not want to visit? Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany.
Neuschwanstein Castle- Bavaria, Germany. Seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public. The shy king had built the castle in order to withdraw from public life. Ironically, today- Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles in Europe. Every year 1.3 million people visit "the castle of the fairy-tale king".

Château de Chenonceau in Chenonceaux (Loire Valley), France. Built between 1515-21 by Chamberlain for King Charles VIII of France, Thomas Bohier. In 1535, the château was seized from his son by King Francis I for unpaid debts to the Crown. After Francis' death (1547), Henry II offered it to his mistress, Diane de Poitiers. In 1555 she commissioned Philibert de l'Orme to build the bridge joining the château to its opposite bank. Henry II died in 1559 & Queen Catherine made it her fav. residence.

Château de Blois is located in the Loiret-Cher department in the Loire Valley, in the center of the city of Blois in France. The medieval castle was purchased in 1391 by Louis, Duc d' Orleans, brother of Charles Vl, after Louis assassination, his widow, Valentina Visconti, retired to this castle at Blois. It was later inherited by their son, Charles d' Orleans, the poet, who was taken prisoner at Agincourt and spent 25 years as a hostage in England, before returning to Blois, which he partially rebuilt. It became the favorite royal residence and political capital of the kingdom under Charles' son, King Loius Xll. At the beginning of the 16th century, the king initiated a reconstruction of the main block of the entry and creation of an Italian garden. When Francis l took power in 1515, his wife, Queen Claude, had him refurbish Blois with the intention of moving to it from the Chateau d' Ambroise. Francis initiated the construction of a new wing and created one of the periods most important libraries in the castle. But after the death of his wife in 1524 he spent very little time at Blois and the massive library was moved to the royal Chateau de Fontainebleau. King Henri lll, driven from Paris during the French Wars of Religion, lived at Blois and held the Estates-General convention in 1576 and 1588. It was during this convention that the King had his arch-enemy Henry l, Duke of Guise assassinated by the Kings body guard known as "Forty-five" when the Duke came to the Chateau for a meeting with Henri in Dec. 1588. They also killed the Duke's brother, Louis ll, Cardinal of Guise the following day in the dungeons. After this, the castle was occupied by Henri lV, the first Bourbon Monarch. On Henri's death in 1610, it became the place for his widow, Marie de Medici, when she was expelled from the court of her son Louis Xlll. In 1626 King Louis Xlll gave the Chateau de Blois to his brother Gaston duc d' Orleans, as a wedding gift. In 1635 there was another attempt to develop the castle but on Gastobs death in 1660, it was abandoned. By the time of the French Revolution the immense castle had been neglected for more than one hundred and thirty years, and the revolutionaries, determined to wipe out any symbol of the old nobility while enriching themselves, ransacked the castle and stole many of its statues, royal emblems and coats of arms. In a state of near total disrepair it was scheduled to be demolished but was given a reprieve as a military barracks, in 1841, under the direction of King Louis-Philippe the Chateau de Blois was classified as a historic monument. It was restored, and turned into a museum. On view for visitors are the supposed poison cabinets of Catherine de Medici. Today the Château is owned by the town of Blois and is a tourist attraction.
