What the night sky would look like in big cities without light pollution
Thierry Cohen. Darkened Cities. San Francisco. #art, #photografhy, #thierrycohen, #sanfrancisco, #darkness, #stars
Stunning pictures imagine the starry night skies over cities after a global blackout: Thierry Cohen imagines the gorgeous side of a Revolution-style blackout with his pictures of cities that have gone completely dark. When the lights go out, brilliant stars are visible over New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, and Rio de Janeiro.
What the city is missing: Thierry Cohen photographs cityscapes and then photographs deserts at night, combing the two to show us what our cities would look like with the lights off. The stars are not enhanced, they are actual photos from relative latitudes that would expose the same starry sky view if it weren't for light pollution. San Francisco.

I...found the creatures...washed up along the shoreline of Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania. No-one knows ...how they die, but it appears...they crash into the lake. The water has an extremely high soda and salt content... The soda and salt causes the creatures to calcify, perfectly preserved, as they dry. I took these creatures as I found them on the shoreline, and then placed them in ‘living’ positions, bringing them back to ‘life’, as it were. Reanimated, alive again in death. - Nick Brandt

Photograph by Nick Brandt. Lake Natron is an insidious trap for the birds of northern Tanzania: The terrifying lake turns to stone all birds that are foolish enough to immerse themselves or unlucky enough to fall into its deceptive water.
The ghastly Lake Natron, in northern Tanzania, is a salt lake—meaning that water flows in, but doesn’t flow out, so it can only escape by evaporation. Over time, as water evaporates, it leaves behind high concentrations of salt and other minerals, like at the Dead Sea and Utah’s Great Salt Lake. Unlike those other lakes, though, Lake Natron is extremely alkaline, due to high amounts of the chemical natron (a mix of sodium carbonate and baking soda) in the water. This is a songbird
A Deadly Alkaline Lake in Africa Turns Animals into Calcified Statues. Lake Natron in northern Tanzania is one of the harshest environments on Earth. Temperatures in the lake can rise to 140 F (60 C) and the alkalinity is between pH 9 and pH 10.5, almost as alkaline as ammonia. Only certain kinds of fish have evolved to survive in such a caustic environment. Birds and other small mammals that end up in the water gradually become calcified, turned to stone in the deadly water.

The days before #Photoshop—where it took a true artist and craftsperson to "fix" pictures. In Seattle, that guy was Al Doggett. He was used by every ad agency, design studio & photographer because he was the best.

NOPE, they're not twins! They're not even related.. they just look alike. I guess everybody really does have a twin, somewhere out there. This photo is from Canadian photographer Francois Brunelle's series, "I'm Not a Look-Alike." He took 200 photos of people who look like identical twins, and are NOT even related. How crazy is that?!

Long exposure photos of couples sleeping, by photographer Paul Schneggenburger.
""What happens to lovers while they are sleeping?" asks German photographer Paul Schneggenburger. "Is it a sleeping just next to each other, each on his own, or is there a sharing of certain places or emotions? Is it a nocturnal lovers' dance, maybe a kind of unaware performed tenderness, or does one turn their back on each other?" In Schneggenburger's gorgeous photo series, The Sleep of the Beloved, he takes long exposure photographs of sleeping couples."
