Richard Avedon Photography, Famous Photographers, Photographs Helped
Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was an American fashion and portrait photographer. An obituary published in The New York Times said that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century".
richard avedon 1979 ~ "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century".
RICHARD AVEDON The most defining photographs of Richard Avedon's career were deceptively simple with few tricks, resulting in images broken down to just the bare emotions and spirit of the subject. After a 20-year tenure with Harper's Bazaar as a staff photographer, Avedon left in 1965 to photograph for Vogue through 1988 and continued to make portraits and fashion photographs for magazines throughout the rest of his career.
Richard Avedon (b.1923 - d. 2004) was an American fashion and portrait photographer. From 1944 to 1950, Avedon studied photography with Alexey Brodovitch at his Design Laboratory at the New School for Social Research. In 1946, Avedon has set up his own studio and soon became the chief photographer for Harper's Bazaar. Sadly, in October 2004, Avedon died in San Antonio, Texas from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was working there on a new project.

He worked first as a photographer for the Merchant Marines, taking identification photos. He then moved to fashion, shooting for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, demanding that his models convey emotion and movement, a departure from the norm of motionless fashion photography.

Born in New York in 1923, Richard Avedon dropped out of high school and joined the Merchant Marine's photographic section. Upon his return in 1944, he found a job as a photographer in a department store. Within two years he had been "found" by an art director at HARPER'S BAZAAR and was producing work for them as well as VOGUE, LOOK, and a number of other magazines. During the early years, Avedon made his living primarily through work in advertising. His real passion, however, was the portrait and its ability to express the essence of its subject. Although Richard Avedon first earned his reputation as a fashion photographer, his greatest achievement has been his stunning reinvention of the genre of photographic portraiture. Featuring approximately 180 works, this exhibition will span the artist's entire career, from his earliest portraits in the late 1940s through his most recent work. At the core of the installation will be a powerful group of portraits of many of the key artistic, intellectual, and political figures from the late 1950s through the early 1970s, including several large murals, perhaps the grandest photographic portraits ever staged. Also featured will be boldly scaled photographs from the ambitious series "In the American West" and a poignant sequence of portraits of the artist's father taken shortly before his death. Avedon's portraits of artists and intellectuals of the last 20 years, including John Cheever, Roy Lichtenstein, and Harold Bloom, complete this artist's collection of individuals who have shaped our world. 'If a day goes by without my doing something related to photography, it’s as though I’ve neglected something essential to my existence, as though I had forgotten to wake up" Richard Avedon, 1970 Fred Astaire with Avedon "I've photographed just about everyone in the world," Mr. Avedon said. "But what I hope to do is photograph people of accomplishment, not celebrity, and help define the difference once again." Malcom X The above picture,”Dovima with the Elephants” was taken by Avedon at the Cirque d’hiver, Paris, in August 1955. The dress was the first evening dress designed for Christian Dior by his new assistant, Yves Saint-Laurent. Groucho Marx Writer Truman Capote Avedon's father Avedon's father Richard Avedon, 1950s

Non ?

Isabella Rossellini. Performance and close obsevation. Even though the model is nude in the image, the almost challenging facial expression and the position of the head and eye line looking down on the camera takes away the idea of vulnerability. There is some soft shadows on the left side, meaning the light would have been positioned to the right (or her left).

Isabella Fiorella Elettra Giovanna Rossellini (born 18 June 1952) is an Italian actress, filmmaker, author, philanthropist, and model. Rossellini is noted for her 14-year tenure as a Lancôme model, and for her roles in films such as Blue Velvet and Death Becomes Her. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabella_Rossellini She began her career as a journalist for RAI Television in Italy, but was assigned purely fluff features and soon grew bored. She then appeared as a regular on an Italian sketch comedy show, where she met a photographer who convinced her she was more a model than a comedienne. But despite great success as a model, she eventually returned to acting. http://www.nndb.com/people/243/000025168/ Born Isabella Fiorella Elettra Giovanna Rossellini 18 June 1952 Rome, Italy Her first film was her mother's A Matter of Time, and she was first noticed by American audiences in White Nights with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. In her most famous role, she was beaten by Dennis Hopperand rescued by Kyle MacLachlan in David Lynch's masterpiece of small-town sadomasochism, Blue Velvet. She lived with Lynch for five years. http://www.nndb.com/people/243/000025168/ From 1982-96, she was the celebrity face of Lancôme cosmetics, but the company ended the arrangement, fearing that Rossellini was too old to be seen as attractive. She has continued making films, including Wild at Heart with Nicolas Cage, Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner, and Roger Dodger with Campbell Scott. She has also played the fierce aunt Katya on TV's Alias with Jennifer Garner. http://www.nndb.com/people/243/000025168/ Occupation Actress, filmmaker, author, model, philanthropist Spouse Martin Scorsese (1979–1982) Jonathan Wiedemann (1983–1986) Parents Roberto Rossellini (deceased) Ingrid Bergman (deceased)
