Famous photo: October 22, 1895 after Granville-to-Paris Express plowed through the wall of the Gare Montparnasse Train Station, Paris, France In one of my French classes I took in Paris we had to make up a story based on this picture. I loved that the actual event happened on my birthday!

Train wreck Paris 1895. Just out of curiosity, how did it get two stories off the ground?

Knowing that he was going to be a few minutes late for the train’s 15:55 arrival at Montparnasse Station time Pellerin kept the train running at high speed as he completed the approach to the station. However, on this October 22 in 1895 the Westinghouse brake system failed and at full speed the train crashed through 100 ft (30m) of station concourse, smashed through a two feet (0.6m) wall and sailed two stories to the ground below. http://www.famouspictures.org/the-train-leaves-the-station/
