Keep the fern in the same pots they come in, every other day submerge them in a 5 gallon bucket filled with 12 cup of epson salts & 3 gallons of regular water until the soil stops bubbling, then hang up to drip dry... ferns will be dark green, glossy, and 3x3 by September from ferns that start out with 7 fronds in May.
Planting! Instead of putting rocks in the bottom of big porch planters, fill the bottom with sealed empty plastic 20 ounce bottles! They give the pot the drainage it needs, without adding all that extra weight!
Good idea for multiple reasons: 1) equisetum grows so quickly and make even the newest newbie of a gardener feel accomplished and happy, 2) equisetum can get out of control and this container will prevent that from happening, 3) creates privacy and covers up some unsightly areas
a dramatic plant color scheme window box for shady locations...left to right, boston fern, 1 solid purple and 2 variegated coleus (purple+green), purple sweet potato vine and trailing creeping jenny. I am going to try in planters in the front since I don't have window boxes!
