"Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her." First line of Jane Austen's book Emma. This is the current book I am reading.
Jane Austens book Emma is a classic must read. Great humor and it really looks into the minds of women and being matchmakers...
I can never decide whether Emma or P&P is my favorite Austen book. NA comes after them, and Persuasion is last.
Emma, by Jane Austen. Even more than Pride and Prejudice, I think this is the greatest of Jane Austen's books; certainly the best story, and the best hero. (If Anne of Green Gables met Jane Austen, Mr. Darcy would be Anne's tall, dark, and brooding ideal, and Mr. Knightly would be Gilbert Blythe.)

My favorite movie - Gone With The Wind -Handsome man, selfish, scheming, unpredictable woman, setting in the 1860's, civil war era...What's not to love?
David O.Selznick's 'Gone With The Wind', 1939, Directed by Victor Fleming - Scarlett O'Hara was a woman who could handle anything, a civil war, or the burning of Atlanta. Scarlett as played by Vivien Leigh was beautiful, temperamental & spoiled. She was also, hopelessly in love with the wrong man, Ashley Wilkes. Not until Rhett Butler ( Clark Gable) enters her life; does she get a glimpse of a man who's genuinely her equal. A Timeless Masterpiece.

My all time favorite book and movie. In 1936 Margaret Mitchell publishes Gone with the Wind. Three years later it hits the silver screen, starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.
It really is an incredible book. I wonder if Margaret Mitchell would have lived if she would written us a sequel that was worth reading. tammster62
Also among my Top Five Favorite books...the epic novel of love, loss, and betrayal set on a backdrop of the civil war. For all her faults, Scarlett O'Hara is my all-time favorite heroine. Scarlett was strong, beautiful and determined...she just didn't always make the best choices in getting what she wanted or needed...
Gone With the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell. One of my favorite books. It's pretty long, but totally worth it! <3
All time favorite book and movie! I first read the book when I was 19 (I think), after seeing the movie several times. Best novel ever written, period. Margaret Mitchell's only novel - she didn't need to write another one - she wrote the perfect novel on her first try; very impressive and amazing. What a great mind, what a great writer. Even as long as the book is, I still have read it a few times.
Favorite book of all time, favorite movie of all time.
Gone with the Wind- my MOST favorite thing!!
Yamina's favorite books books-worth-reading
Gone with the Wind is a novel written by Margaret Mitchell, first published in 1936. The story is set in Clayton County, Georgia, and Atlanta during the American Civil War and Reconstruction era. It depicts the experiences of Scarlett O'Hara, the spoiled daughter of a well-to-do plantation owner, who must use every means at her disposal to come out of the poverty she finds herself in after Sherman's March to the Sea. A historical novel, the story is a Bildungsroman or coming-of-age story, with the title taken from a poem written by Ernest Dowson. Gone with the Wind was popular with American readers from the onset and was the top American fiction bestseller in the year it was published and in 1937. As of 2014, a Harris poll found it to be the second favorite book of American readers, just behind the Bible. More than 30 million copies have been printed worldwide. Written from the perspective of the slaveholder, Gone with the Wind is Southern plantation fiction. Its portrayal of slavery and African Americans is controversial, as well as its use of a racial epithet and ethnic slurs. However, the novel has become a reference point for subsequent writers about the South, both black and white. Scholars at American universities refer to it in their writings, interpret and study it. The novel has been absorbed into American popular culture. Margaret Mitchell was imaginative in the use of color symbolism, especially the colors red and green, which surround Scarlett O'Hara. Mitchell identified the primary theme as survival. She left the ending speculative for the reader, however. She was often asked what became of her lovers, Rhett and Scarlett. She did not know, and said, "For all I know, Rhett may have found someone else who was less difficult." Two sequels authorized by Mitchell's estate were published more than a half century later. A parody was also produced. Mitchell received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the book in 1937. It was adapted into a 1939 American film. The book is often read or misread through the film. Gone with the Wind is the only novel by Mitchell published during her lifetime
