Have to try: been doing this for years! it's a Brazilian staple! cook a sealed can of condensed milk in a pot boiling water for 3 hours. continue to add boiling water to cover the can as the water will evaporate. let can cool COMPLETELY. then open carefully & wahlah... dulce de leite :)

How to make caramel from sweetened condensed milk. This is pretty interesting. And the photo is yummy looking. But two hours in a pot of boiling water...that is a long time. I can make caramel in about five minutes on the stove top. Anyway...it is interesting.
