Greta Garbo, 18 Sept. 1905 – 15 April 1990, born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, Swedish film actress, Hollywood and international legend. Retired 1941 at 35. Offered many opportunities to return to the screen, declining all. She lived a private life in New York, shunning publicity. Garbo invested wisely and left her entire estate, $32,042,429—$57,000,000 by 2013 rates—to her niece, Gray Reisfield. Her ashes are buried in Sweden.

She has been forever linked to her famous line in Grand Hotel, "I want to be alone". But she later remarked, "I never said, 'I want to be alone'; I only said, 'I want to be let alone'. There is a world of difference". Garbo never married, had no children, and lived alone as an adult. She died in 1990, aged 84 as a result of renal failure.
