Kealakeakua Bay. The continental shelf drops a fair amount about 50 yards off the coastline, but this is by far one of the best snorkeling spots I've been to. We saw so many varieties of fish, not much by way of pretty coral, but our highlight? Dolphins! Live, playful dolphins.

2-step beach; one of my fave places in Kona to snorkel; you can see Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. "Place of Refuge at Honaunau." You LITERALLY take 2 natural built-in steps in the lava rock, then *PLUNK* into the warm water you go! SCUBA would be good there too; plenty of cavernous reefs below.
Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park (Place of Refuge). We had a picnic at dusk and saw dolphins, a shark, and humpback whale with calf--it was amazing.

A green sea turtle hovering over a reef is cleaned by a school of fish in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. This is one of the images featured in the Sea Changes exhibition at Bristol's Blue Reef Aquarium. ok, so I can't have a turtle in an aqarium, but it was certainly pin-worthy!

Reconsidering the Moorish Idol: One makes no understatement in saying that this is a species for the advanced aquarist. Still, in consideration of all of the technological and methodological refinements taking place in the hobby, there is every reason to conclude that the Moorish idol will yet become a staple of the ornamental fish trade. | See more about Tropical Fish, Fish and Hobbies.
Moorish Idols (Zanclus cornutus) ✿ #ocean life
MOORISH IDOL (Zanclus cornutus), or Kinikihi in Hawaiian. They prefer shallow reef waters & lagoons & often school as juveniles. Like butterfly fishes, they mate for life. Adult males tend to be aggressive toward one another. They grow up to 8” long & are not long lived in captivity although they are popular aquarium fish. The Moors in Africa believe them to be fish of happiness & with their colorful bodies & graceful patterns you can see why they bring a smile. Photo by Mila Zinkova, in Kona

Snorkeling in the clear waters of Kona
Kona Ocean Adventures. Hawaii Manta Ray fins evolved into wide triangular wings they use to “fly” through the water. From 4-20 ft, they amongst the largest sea creatures. They are fascinating & stunningly beautiful. Believed to live up to 25 years, they have been documented swimming at depths of up to 100 feet These gentle giants will absolutely take your breath away. Unlike most of their relatives, Manta Rays have NO teeth, stinger or barbs and are completely safe to be around.
