Joseph-Maurice Ravel (1875 – 1937) was a French composer known for his melodies, orchestral and instrumental textures and effects. Much of his piano , chamber, vocal and orchestral music has entered the standard concert repertoire. Ravel's piano compositions, demand considerable virtuosity from the performer, and his orchestral music, including Daphnis et Chloé and his arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, uses a variety of sound and instrumentation.

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of French-Polish parentage. He is considered one of the great masters of Romantic music. From 1837 to 1847 he carried on a relationship with the French writer Amantine Dupin (a.k.a. George Sand). For most of his life, Chopin suffered from poor health; he died in Paris at age 39. The German composer, pianist, and conductor Johannes Brahms was one of the most significant composers of the 19th C. His works combine the Romantic period with classical influences. Brahams composed early in life but he gained attention when he went on concert tour as accompanist to violinist Eduard Reményi. Alongside Anton Bruckner, Brahms was perhaps the major practitioner of the symphony during the latter half of the 19th C.; his works paved the way for others such as Mahler and Sibelius.
