Trash Island in the Pacific Ocean You may have heard that there is a large island of trash floating in the Pacific Ocean. This is actually just one of the trash islands on the planet. It is comprised of tons of particles of trash (mainly plastic) that have gathered together due to the behavior of the ocean’s current. It contains many chemicals that are dangerous to living organisms. Many animals are killed from it because they mistake bits of trash as prey.

Plans were unveiled by Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup Foundation, for an Ocean Cleanup Array, brought on after launching a school project that analyzed the amount and size of the plastic particles in the ocean’s garbage patches. The Ocean Cleanup Array project has the potential to remove 7,250,000 tons of plastic from the world’s oceans; save hundreds of thousands of aquatic life each year; and reduce PCB, DDT, and other pollutants from affecting the food chain, which includes human...

Map showing the oceans' five major gyres | The Great Pacific garbage patch, also described as the Pacific trash vortex, is a 'gyre of marine debris particles' in the central North Pacific Ocean located roughly between 135°W to 155°W and 35°N and 42°N. .. The patch extends over an indeterminate area, with estimates ranging very widely depending on the degree of plastic concentration used to define the affected area.

A big misconception on purchasing plastic water bottles is that even when you DO recycle your plastic bottles only a certain % of that bottle can be recycled, the rest is waste that sits for many years on the Earth's surface. Please think 2x before buying plastic water bottles and instead convert to purchasing a reusable water bottle for water consumption...Not only will you be helping prevent more pollution but it will save you money as well...

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Captain Charles Moore gives us a visual journey into the plastics problem in the seas and on the earth.
No one knows for sure but scientists think over six million tons of marine debris may be entering our ocean every year. One of the reasons Project AWARE is collecting marine debris data from divers is to help build a clear picture of the underwater trash that threatens ocean life. With this knowledge, we can make more effective decisions when it comes to waste management policies.

What happens to the stuff we don’t want anymore? Chris Jordan depicts the refuse of the masses, how it is stored as well as the unfathomable quantity of waste humans produce today. In these large scale photographs we see mounds of worthless cellphones only years old, cars heaped, twisted and compressed into unrecognizable forms, or a sea of broken colorful glass shards.

Between California and Hawaii, a huge patch is found. You might be thinking that what is this patch made up of? Well it is very sad, but this patch is of marine litter. This Pacific Trash Vortex is estimated to be twice the size if Texas that is a state of America. Located in the central North Pacific Ocean, this area is developed because of water currants in this area known as North Pacific Gyre. It contains plastic, chemical and other rubbish that come in the way of these gyres. This waste is created by 80% land garbage which mostly comes from North America and the coasts of Japan and 20% of ships that produce 80 tons of debris every week. Apart from that the toxic material of fish nets as well as the waste and toxic material of industries are a great reason behind it. Though its size is huge and it is quite dense, still it is not visible from satellite as most of the contents lies beneath the surface. This waste is eaten by the marine life which causes a lot of problems for them and sometimes these fishes are eaten by humans, cause health problem for them too. This patch was predicted in 1988 but actually found in 1997. Different voyages are sent to determine this patch and how to collect it and recycle it.
At this point, cleaning it up isn’t an option. It’s just going to get bigger as our reliance on plastics continues. … The long-term solution is to stop producing as much plastic products at home and change our consumption habits.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Not Great at all. It's an Island the size of the state of Texas made of plastic garbage floating in the ocean.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also described as the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a gyre of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean. Twice the size of Texas and almost a mile deep this trash pile has been accumulating for over 60 years. Think about this before you use another disposable water bottle, plastic plates, or plastic fork. #charlottepediatricclinic
