Leonardo Da Vinci drew several sketches that led to a final painting of the Virgin and the Child with St. Anne. In this sketch he possibly employed Sfumato (a technique to apply smoke for forms rather than edges to separate light and shadow). There’s no edge. It should disappear by blending the same tone throughout. This also shows his methodology of keeping his sketches in notes before he was commissioned to work on a project
