When wool is washed and dried, it is transformed: The fibers pull together to produce the soft, thick fabric we call felt. This is unintentional, of course. But you can shrink a sweater on purpose -- one that's old, with holes or stains, perhaps -- turning it into a medium that's wonderful for crafting.

DIY: Felt an old sweater to make a new pair of woolen mittens... easy, fun gift idea
Get more life out of old sweaters It can easily happen: A wool sweater gets included in a load of laundry that’s machine-washed in hot water and dried in a dryer, making the sweater shrink so it’s way too small to wear. The upside of having one or more such sweaters is they’re great to cut up and use in craft projects; the dense weave of felted wool tends not to fray, and the sweater pieces are pretty easy to stitch together or onto other material. If you haven’t accidentally felted a sweater lately, you could intentionally felt one, e.g., wash and dry a sweater you’ve outgrown or purchased at a thrift store. If you haven’t felted something before, the process can leave a fiber-y residue in your washing machine (and water line) — I suggest reading Diane Gilleland’s felting tips on the Craftystylish blog first. Want project ideas? See earlier Unconsumption DIY posts on making a patchwork cover to use on iPads and other things (here), and a holiday wreath (wreath #7 in the group shown here). This Threadbanger post features several ideas with links to tutorials, as does this Pinterest board. (From the looks of that Pinterest page, I’d say Marta McCall is a felt fan!) As for me, I’m going to keep things simple and cut out circles to make both a miniature holiday tree for next year and coasters. (Mitten photo, via Food & Crafts on Pinterest, which links to this MarthaStewart.com post with how-to info for mittens, a patchwork blanket, a basket, and more; hat photo, via Vintage Indie, which includes a brief tutorial.)

How to dye buttons! I'm seeing a lot of button ideas that I like and it would be great to make them match exactly how I want!
How to dye buttons! for all the button craft ideas on pinterest!
You can dye plastic buttons Whether you are a crafter or a sewing fashionista, you will enjoy dyeing buttons. It’s fun and easy to do. Most white buttons are made out of nylon or some type of plastic. Rit is one of the few dyes that will color these materials. That means you can transform ordinary buttons into colorful accents that match or coordinate with whatever you are making. Rit Dye colors shown: Lemon Yellow, Golden Yellow, Sunshine, Orange, Apple Green Supplies Needed Rit Liquid or Powder Dye: Any color or mix dye to create a custom color. Colors used in photographs: Sunshine Orange, Evening Blue, Scarlet, Fuchsia, Lemon Yellow, Violet, Apple Green, Golden Yellow White Buttons Measuring Cup Measuring Spoons Disposable Plastic Containers for dyeing buttons Spoon for mixing dyes Rubber Gloves Plastic Table Cover Paper Towels Instructions Cover work surface with a plastic table cover. Decide what colors you like and prepare dye according to the basic recipe below. Liquid dyes are more concentrated than powder dyes so use half as much dye. Always test color with fabric scrap or paper towel before dyeing buttons. If color is too light, add more dye; if it is too dark, add more water. Basic Recipe: Measure and mix 1 teaspoon liquid dye or 2 teaspoons powder dye with 1 Cup HOT Water. Shake liquid dyes before measuring. Water should be about 140°F. If your tap water is not hot enough, heat some in the microwave or a tea kettle. Pour dye and water into a plastic container; stir. Make sure container is deep enough. Immerse buttons in dye solution for 2 to 5 minutes. Stir occasionally and check color frequently. Remove buttons when desired color is achieved. Rinse buttons. Then wash with soap and water, rinse and dry with paper towels.
Just discovered that you can dye plastic buttons. Totally going to do this for button crafts.
I had no idea buttons could be dyed -fantastic since white buttons are plentiful. How to dye buttons! Super handy for all of the button projects I've been wanting to tackle!

Book holder for the car :) The pockets were cut to 8x9in. with a felt backing. I made all 4 pockets, then topstitched them onto a 11x30in solid panel of felt (front and back) that was sewn top and sides. I overlapped the pockets about 3 inches. Inserted a piece of cardboard into the solid panel and then finished the last side. Add straps, and done! Smart idea.
Book holder for the car :) So need to make this!
