Roland from the Dark Tower was an obvious inspiration for Etienne. Great series and I highly recommend it even if you aren't typically a Stephen King fan.

Stephen King – Wizard and Glass

The Dark Tower IV : Wizard & Glass this is the slowest book in the series. It's still a good book, but I would have rather found out more about Roland's childhood in Gilead, or the battle of Jericho.
