[Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, ca. 1484-1486. Tempera on canvas, approx. 5'9" X 9'2". Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence.] This painting is one of the works done for the Medici family, by Botticelli. The theme of this work came from the writings of Homer, an ancient poet. According to the account, after Venus was born, she rode on a seashell and sea foam, to the Cythera Island. In this painting, Venus is born out of the foam as she rides to shore.

Sandro Botticelli - Venus (Detail) Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, better known as Sandro Botticelli was an Italian painter of the Florentine school during the Early Renaissance. His posthumous reputation suffered until the late 19th century; since then his work has been seen to represent the linear grace of Early Renaissance painting.

"Cestello Annunciation" by Sandro Botticelli, 1489-1490. Why is Mary seemingly retracting away from Gabriel as if overwhelmed by the weight of her mission? All of Botticelli's work is riddled with symbols, so I'm puzzled as to what layer of meaning is concealed herein. Is she frightened by the her tragic future, as any woman would be? Why is Gabriel rising from his kneeling position, as if to prevent her collapse? They're also very close to each other, almost touching hands...

Primavera - Sandro Botticelli Early Renaissance, allegorical painting, tempera on panel, 314x203cm; Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, Italy
Primavera, also known as Allegory of Spring, is a tempera panel painting by Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. Painted ca. 1482. The history of the painting is not certainly known, though it seems to have been commissioned by one of the Medici family. It contains elements of Ovid and Lucretius and may have been inspired by a poem of Poliziano. Since 1919 it has been part of the collection of the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy.

The Dancing Examination (1880) by Edgar Degas The Dancing Examination demonstrates how pastel was a good medium for Degas's portrayal of dancers; with each stroke, he described a gesture - the point of a foot, the arch of a neck - as swiftly as it was made in life. To suggest the weight or insubstantiality of form - from the dancers' sturdy limbs to their flowing skirts - he varied the pressure of his touch. #art #Degas #dance
