Louis Armstrong. Armstrong's influence extends well beyond jazz music, and by the end of his career in the 1960s, he was widely regarded as a profound influence on popular music in general. Armstrong was one of the first truly popular African-American entertainers to "cross over," whose skin-color was secondary to his music in an America that was severely racially divided. -article about Billie Holiday, American jazz singer...interesting fact..Holiday was busted for drugs, literally, on her deathbed. Armed guards were posted at her hospital door when she died. She had a long struggle with drug addiction.
Billie Holiday Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and musical partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Wikipedia Born: April 7, 1915, Philadelphia, PA Died: July 17, 1959, New York City, NY Full name: Eleanora Harris Movies: Lady Sings the Blues, New Orleans
Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Harris) April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and musical partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. Critic John Bush wrote that Holiday "changed the art of American pop vocals forever."
This is a portrait of famous 1950s Jazz singer Billie Holiday taken from Down Beat magazine. Holiday's song "Strange Fruit" is one of her most known and a perfect example of her protest through music. "Strange Fruit" was originally a poem written by Jewish teacher Abel Meeropol who wrote it to speak out against Lynchings in America. Billie Holiday faced discrimination herself in a segregated America and through adding "Strange Fruit" to her set list it was almost a way of protest.
