This photograph shows some of the bombers secured on Hornet’s flight deck. An escorting destroyer, USS Gwin (DD-433) is closing from astern, with light cruiser USS Nashville (CL-43) in the distance. Two more ships are on the horizon.
On 18 April 1942, airmen of the US Army Air Forces, led by Lt. Col. James H. (Jimmy) Doolittle, carried the Battle of the Pacific to the heart of the Japanese empire with a surprising and daring raid on military targets at Tokyo, Yokohama, Yokosuka, Nagoya, and Kobe.

On April 18, 1942 sixteen B-25B Mitchell bombers took off from the flight deck of the USS Hornet bound for Tokyo on a strategic bombing mission. The Operation was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle of the U.S. Army Air Force and would bear the man’s name into the annals of history.
USS Hornet Preparations for the famous Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942. Largely a morale boosting operation, it involved 16 B-25 medium bombers carried by the aircraft carrier
The Doolittle Raider B-25s - The Doolittle Raid, also known as the Tokyo Raid, on 18 April 1942, was an air raid by the United States on the Japanese capital Tokyo and other places on Honshu island during World War II, the first air raid to strike the Japanese Home Islands. It demonstrated that Japan itself was vulnerable to American air attack, served as retaliation for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 194. The raid was planned and led by Lieutenant Colonel "Jimmy" Doolittle.
Here's the caption for this pic: On 18 April 1942, Airmen of the US Army Air Forces, led by Lt. Col. James H. (Jimmy) Doolittle, carried the Battle of the Pacific to the heart of the Japanese empire with a surprising and daring raid on military targets at Tokyo, Yokohama, Yokosuka, Nagoya, and Kobe. This heroic attack against these major cities was the result of coordination between the Army Air Forces and the US Navy, which carried the sixteen North American B-25 medium bombers aboard the carrier USS Hornet to within take-off distance of the Japanese Islands. Part II. James Harold Doolittle (1896-1993) The B-25's, being launched for the Tokyo raid, Apr. 18, 1942) Doolittle served as a pilot-instructor during WWI. He was a pioneer aviator; attained fame as a daredevil flyer and took part in numerous air races. After the Tokyo raid he commanded American air forces in North Africa and Europe.
On April 18 1942, nearly 700 miles from Tokyo, carrier USS Hornet launched 16 B-25 medium bombers led by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy H Doolittle for the first attack on the Japanese homeland, proving its vulnerability - a great feat of airmanship, as the crowded flight deck shows. The surviving aircraft flew on to China.

Republic P-47 Thunderbolt (the Jug) is my favorite World War II Fighter. This was one of the most rugged aircraft ever built, on a few occasions the P-47 was lucky enough to limp back to base with one of it's pistons blown completely out of the engine block!

LZ 129 Hindenburg before her first flight (March 4, 1936). “The new manual on airship, which has been in preparation by the Germans for some time, is not yet complete. Captain Lehmann hopes to see its completion next winter. Meanwhile, the old manual prepared in 1918 by Dr. Eckener (“Brief notes and practical hints for the piloting of Zeppelin Airships”) is still a good guide as to German doctrines and practices…. There is no ‘ground school’ as such.” It was never completed.
