1936??? "The Styx" Evening Dress (sans bolero), Elizabeth Hawes (American, 1903–1971): fall/winter 1936, American, silk. "...The crisscrossing of the taffeta portion of the bodice, coupled with the insertion of a draped collar of satin, adds textural and three dimensional effects. When worn with the bolero, it is not possible to see much of this detail as the cut of the hem follows the lines of the bodice, smoothing out the overall effect..."

Emerald green dress worn by Marilyn to the Golden Globes March 1962
Marilyn's green Norman Norell evening gown worn the the 1962 Golden Globes. Because Marilyn had lost weight, she worried that if she wore the dress as designed, the bodice might flatten her bustline. She had a dressmaker add a small strap to behind her neck to turn the dress into a halter, which created a much more flattering cowl neck. She wanted nothing to detract from her bare back, so the side straps were left unused and were incorporated into the front of the dress as a feature.
