he House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikma) was a library, translation institute and research centre established in Abbasid-era Baghdad, Iraq. By the middle of the ninth century, the House of Wisdom was the largest repository of books in the world.

Omar Khayyám Born in Nishapur, at a young age he moved to Samarkand and obtained his education there. In Bukhara he became established as one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of the medieval period. He is the author of one of the most important treatises on algebra written before modern times, the Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra, which includes a geometric method for solving cubic equations by intersecting a hyperbola with a circle. Died in 1131.

Early attempts: 852 AD; Under Caliph Abd al- Rahman II a daredevil by the name Arman Firman, decided to jump off a tower in Cordoba, Spain, using a huge winglike cloak to break his fall, surviving with minor injuries. This inspired a young astronomer Abbas Ibn Firnas who, in 875 AD, would be the first man in history to make a scientific attempt at flying (picture inset).
