bUddy Holly was a huge rock and roll star when he boarded a plane in an Iowa snowstorm in 1959. It's his death -- along with Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (aka the Big Bopper) -- that's referred to as the day the music died. All that talent. He was 22, Valens was 17 and Bopper was the old man at 28.

Ritchie Valens (born Valenzuela) was only 17 and already had a several big hits when he died along with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper on Feb 3, 1959.
