5 Bright Spots: Fun Flower Crafts

Thousands of wonderful art and craft ideas to do with kids that are fun, easy, and enjoyable for grown-ups too! You'll find crafts, art, activities, games, treats, and more for all holidays, seasons, and ages.

This felt flower necklace tutorial at Willowday is simple enough for kids to do and so pretty too!

Flowers and buds everywhere? Has Spring sprung near you, too? Our lawn is in bloom and it seems that it's possible for flowers to even pop up on our walls! I love the combination of monograms and flowers in this framed piece we made together for our daughters room. They're a very easy, simple project, a super way to personalise a room and a lot of fun to create.  Follow below for the full tutorial. Supplies: Fabric Flowers, scissors, hot glue gun, pencil, frame with white backing*. To make: - Lightly draw letter in your white backing board. - Clip away all stems so that you have the flower buds only. - Heat glue gun and begin at the top of the letter by applying glue to the top of the letter and pressing flowers onto the outline. Work from top to bottom, filling in the full letter.  - Once the letter has been filled, your flower monogram is complete.  * Use a frame that is a little deeper so that it can house artwork with dimension.  Happy Making! I'd love to see what you do with these! willowday: Clay Bunny Necklaces

Clay bunny necklaces tips

Bunny necklace

Happy Monday! I hope the week's off to a great start and I hope you and your smalls will have the chance to make these thumbprint bunny necklaces. We think they're so sweet to wear, give and fun to make! Continue below to learn how... To make these little necklaces, you just need clay, a wooden skewer and ribbon. That's it! I think that they're just as sweet when they're imperfect with finger prints as I do, when you polish them with water before dry. You can be the judge yourself and use this idea for your age group. Happy Making! Supplies: Air-dry Clay or sculpty clay, wood skewer, ribbon for necklace How to make: - Take a walnut sized piece of clay and form into a round ball. Smoothing the surface. - Add 2 pieces in the shapes of ears and attach; smooth surface. If using sculpty clay, smooth with fingers, if using air-dry clay, you may dampen a cloth an lightly run it across the surface to smooth. - Press the wooden skewer through the top of the form and start to flatten the shape.  - Twist the skewer while shaping to keep it loose and once the bunny head is flat, pull the skewer out. - With the sharp end of the skewer, draw a bunny face. - Let dry.  - Once bunny is dry, thread on to ribbon and wear or give as a gift! Happy Making. Paper Cup Apple Wrap Sweet and so very simple!

Apple Party Favors for an Harvest Party

Paper Cup #Apple Gift Wrap

Paper Cup Apple

Gift Wrap Series #27: Paper Cup Apple Wrap Happy Friday! Cozy thoughts of Fall days ahead have me thinking about wrapping up -- and also wrapping gifts! This week's wraps would be perfect for an Apple Party, An Apple for the Teacher or for just wrapping something special for the Apple of your eye! To top this off, they're incredibly easy to make! Just choose paper cups in any apple color and then, continue below for the full tutorial. Click on "Read More" to continue for full tutorial ... Supplies: -Paper Cups, To make these I used red, Granny Smith Green and Yellow -Scissors -Washi, Masking or Paper Packing Tape, To make these I matched the tape to the cup color - Leaf: I used mint green washi tape -  you can choose any tape or cut a paper leaf and attach - Ribbon or Cord, To make these I used a jute cord HOW TO MAKE: 1. Cutting evenly, trim the top "lip" of the cup off. 2. Mark 8 even marks around the cup (Photo below to the left) To do this, I gently bent the cup in 1/2 along the upper rim and turned it the other way and marked the other 1/2 markings along the rim; then, bending it again at each midway point between this first set of 4 points to create 8 even marking which I then penciled in. 3. Cut about 2" slits down the sides of the cups. Start from the top at each of the 8 markings and snip straight down. Keep these snips even. Once these 8 cuts have been made, fold each tab, one after another, over the top of one another, all of the way around the cup. These tabs will neatly cascade. The package is now ready to be filled ---- fill the cup with goodies, snaps or a present before proceeding to finish the top. Happy, Happy, Making! To finish the top Cut 5" length of ribbon/jute. Tie the ends together with a knot. Insert the knot into the top of the cup and then, seal this with a circular shaped piece of tape. I cut a slit from the edge into the middle so that you can slide this circular piece to fit around the jet. (See examples below) Once this is secure, cut the leaf and fold it over the handle. I like to mark these as name tags or little note cards. Happy March!  I'm so excited about this post but before we begin making, I'm hoping that March is off to a wonderful start for you, too! Do you feel Spring in the air? I'm so glad to meet you again after our break. (Click below for full post + Wooden Bead Hair Twist Tutorial that I've shared over at designmom:) This first week has brought: Semla feasts, our first visitors of the month; wonderful Winter Break memories which included home, exploration of Stockholm and some very special Mom + kid time in London (+ reunion with beloved friends.) Happily, we've proven to ourselves that "yes, we can" survive our first year ever without skiing (a stiff upper lip was needed: knees must be healed and they're moving beautifully, again!) --- and the house has been full of happy, spontaneous, creativity (like this!) and of course, more time to bead new hair twists . There are so many beautiful Spring colors.  The Perfect Gift: Wooden Bead Hair Twists at designmom Click here for the full post and tutorial -- I'd just love to see what you do with these! The idea for these came about through my love of unexpected combinations or contrasts  -- such as, in this case, glitter vs.  raw wood. When I think about my inspiration for these, in many ways they're a very natural reflection the two worlds we live between and a perfect way to combine Swedish nature and popular American products for something really special. I hope you think so, too. Happy Making! I'd just love to see what you do with these! Click here for full tutorial and more photos. 21 Mothers Day Crafts for Kids - Craft Or DIY

Personalized Mother's Day Present Flipping for dipping. Dipped jewelry keeps catching my eye recently. I absolutely love the contrast of wood and shine and wanted to do a project with the kids for special mothers in our lives. After trial and error, we've decided that painting to achieve the dipped look, vs actual dipping, worked best. If you'd like to know how we made these, please continue below. Above: Satin Band Mother's Necklace (front) Below See front and back examples of these personalized dipped beads. Above: various hairstyles: HOW TO: 1) Tape beads. 2) Paint. 3) Once dry, add eyes. 4) Thread. (See photos below) SUPPLIES: Wooden beads (Wooden bracelet, optional) Wooden skewers Paint Paint Brushes Masking Tape Satin or Leather band for necklace or bracelet To make the above Mother's Day necklace: 1) Choose an equal number beads as children. 2) Using masking tape, mask off the face area of the bead by wrapping a piece of tape around the bead and pressing firmly. (See diagrams above: For short hair, simply wrap the tape around the bead. For long hair, angle the tape in two directions in order to achieve a V-shape for the hair.) 3) Thread the beads onto the wooden skewer and elevate so that the paint will not rest on your work surface. I used two rolls of wide masking tape and taped the skewers in place so that they wouldn't fall while we were painting. 4) Paint the exposed surface of the bead. With the beads on a skewer, spinning the beads on the skewers to paint them evenly works smoothly. 5) Once the paint is dry, remove tape and add eyes. 6) Once dry, string the beads on desired necklace material. For this project, I used satin for a long necklace; tied knots between each bead and finished it with a bow for long necklaces. For bracelets, I used a waxed linen and tied these with adjustable slip knots (instructions here). If these are for a Mother who doesn't like to wear costume jewelry, why not make these into a key chain? Conversation Heart Popcorn | willowday

Conversation Heart Popcorn

Make Conversation Heart Popcorn this Valentine's Day! It's a love snack: popcorn, sprinkled with love!  How often is that the thought on my mind when I'm creating in the kitchen --- cooking with love and from the heart --- using Candy Conversation Hearts like little cupids bows in popcorn clouds! jump Conversation Heart Popcorn Ingredients: 1 Batch Popcorn 100 grams Good Quality White Chocolate 1 Handful of Conversation Heart Candies - Pop popcorn. - Crush candy hearts by placing in a plastic bag and crushing with a hammer. - Melt white chocolate To make Conversation Heart Popcorn like ours, I saved out about 1/4 - 1/3 of my heaping handful of Conversation Hearts to leave whole and then, smashed the rest of these candies. Do this to your own personal taste. I felt that leaving the candies whole would be too much of a mouthful but, breaking these into chunky pieces looked so great! - In a large bowl, drizzle the white chocolate over the popcorn and then, toss the candy onto and mix well. Let cool and solidify. Party time! Conversation Hearts really fit the saying "absence makes the heart grown fonder" because for me, these are quintessential to Valentine's Day but non-existent in Sweden. I've checked every market and grocer I could find or visit that I thought might carry these candies and can't find one supplier. When our friends, Michelle and Emilia, recently visited us from New York bearing these holiday candies we like so lucky!  In addition to hiding them away until this weekend, it occurred to me that I could actually use these as sprinkles in a popcorn  this idea was born!  At first, I thought I'd make a carmel corn with with a white or more transparent base but, then, realised that by using white chocolate, I could actually make these with less sugar and by using white chocolate, not compete with the color of the candies.   If you use our recipe, I'd love to see yours too! Rock Painting http://www.willowday.com/2012/04/unplugged-kid-craft.html

Kid's Craft while traveling: This weekend, after a memorable southern French extended family lunch, out came the paints for the kids. Have you tried rock painting with your kids? It's such simple fun: find interesting rocks and bring out the paints. They were the only extra item I needed to pack. Everything else was either in my necessity or available on the spot. We still have a few stones that the kids painted from years before as nice reminders of earlier trips. We'll leave behind a few We'll leave behind a few nice little paper weight as gifts and return to Stockholm with a nice mementos, too.
