Dune by Frank Herbert - I ended up reading the Dune series instead of the Lord of the Rings when I was younger. I loved it then and hope to re-read them one day. Amazing how vast a world was created. I recall each chapter started with a small quote and I really enjoyed that. Also, it was similar to learning a new language and how at the beginning you are referring to the dictionary a lot and then all of sudden you realize you haven't checked it in ages.

Dubbed "science fiction's supreme masterpiece," Dune is the vision of the distant future as detailed as the Lord of the Rings world. The book critiques modern philosophy, human evolution, our attachment to oil, the puppetry of corporate power in politics, and the power of religion to unify and divide humanity. Elements of the book are found in all modern fiction, including in "Star Wars" with the desert planet theme, and the cyclical fight between robots and machines is found in "The Matrix."

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I can remember the first time I read this one. Excellent story. Hollywood will be bringing a version of this book to film and Card just released a prequel called Earth Unaware.

Aluminium sign featuring the Bene Gesserit 'Litany Against Fear' from the Dune books: "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total oblivion. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain". $25

Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel - Another good cover design -- I've been meaning to plunge into this for a while.

Uther by Jack Whyte. Even though this book can be read as a stand alone, I find if you read the other books in the Camulod series first you come to understand Uther's character more and the connection and enjoyment of the story increases. Related to the Arthurian legend, but through his ancestors.
