Evening Dress (back view), Weeks (French): 1910, French, silk/metal. "Associated with royalty and symbolizing beauty, immortality and exoticism, the peacock has long been a favorite motif of artists. Particularly during the Art Nouveau movement, designers incorporated the birds into their work, inspired by the creatures’ sinuous bodies and showy feathers. In this gown, by the little-known Parisian house of Weeks, both printed and embroidered peacock motifs enliven the skirt and bodice. The me...

Evening dress worn by Queen Maud of Norway, 1910-13. Maud lived through a period of tremendous change in fashionable dress for women, from the elaborate and decorative clothing of the Victorian age through to the light, simple dresses of the 1920s. The fact that her clothing was preserved in the Royal Dress Collection of Norwa allowed a rare opportunity to see those changes in dress in person, instead of only by way of photos.

Jacques Doucet Date: 1898–1900 This ball gown is simplistic in design, yet extravagant by the choice of materials used. The sheer overlayer is enhanced by the solid lamé underlayers and a sense of luxury is added by the hidden lace flounce at the hem. Undoubtedly, a woman would make an entrance in this dress, as it is extremely seductive with its form fitting silhouette and low décolleté.
