Summarization Strategy called "the incredible shrinking notes". Students start out writing a summary of a reading selection on the large index card. Students are then given the medium sized card and have to take the information from the large card and condense it onto the medium sized card. Finally, students are given the small card and must take the information from the medium sized card and condense it further onto the small card. Great way for students to get to the main point/idea!
Tabletop Twitter: The teacher chooses a passage from a book for students to respond to. Student write their own response and then move around to respond to what another student said. Since this is a Twitter-inspired activity there is no talking and short responses.
After my students write a piece I have them leave it on their desks when they go to lunch or special area classes. I place a Skittle on each correct punctuation mark (and I usually put one or two one if they indent a paragraph). Let me tell you, Skittles are the great motivator!
