Tremoctopus - This shot was taken during a blackwater night dive, many miles off the coast of Kona, HI on the big island. Suspended under the boat with 7000ft of ocean beneath us, in the dead of night, we search for some of the strangest critters on earth. The nightly mesopelagic migration from the deep sea to the ocean surface gives us a rare glimpse into a world not often seen. Photo and caption by Joshua Lambus

Is this an octopus that ripped off the tentacles of a man-o-war jellyfish and is using them as weapons? Joshua Lambus, "When I first saw the animal it was balled up very small and didn't show the siphonophore tentacles at all. After the first flash of my strobes it unfurled its tentacles, changed colors and presented the the man o’ war tentacles you see in the photo - J Lambus Photography via Ocean Defender - Hawaii FB
