Caterina van Hemessen - Portrait of a Young Lady, 1560 at Baltimore Art Museum by mbell1975, via Flickr
The Metropolitan Museum of Art - Portrait of a Lady. Standing before a window with a view onto the seacoast, this young woman, with her blonde hair, high forehead, fair complexion, and gesture of modesty or humility, epitomizes the Renaissance ideal of female beauty. Gold dots originally decorated the shell niche and the veil on her hair, adding a diaphanous quality. She is presented in terms not dissimilar to those of the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation—a portrait of demure virtue.
