The Library (1905) Elizabeth Shippen Green (USA, 1935-45) - This is part of a collection called “The Mistress of the House”, published in Harper’s Monthly Magazine. It accompanies other idealized images of the life of an early 1900s woman. Her library does look nice, with the small window and the assorted knickknacks
The Library ~ Elizabeth Shippen Green 1905, This reminds me of Anne of Green Gables when she rented a house with friends when she went away from school.
a comfortable spot to read. This is a good idea for the living room. I love the idea of a book nook - and doing again my book-nest in the bedroom.
The Library. First published in “The Mistress of the House” in Harper’s Monthly, August 1905. The original watercolour illustration is now owned by the Delaware Art Museum. Elizabeth Shippen Green (American, 1871-1954). The mistress of the house is relaxing and reading in her library. Green illustrated children’s books and worked for years for Harper’s. Green mastered her technique of sparkling watercolor glazes over solid charcoal drawings and, then later, she began painting in opaque colors.
