Xylitol is not the safe, natural sweetener manufacturers would have you believe. While it is true that xylitol is a naturally occurring substance, manufactured xylitol is another matter entirely. Commercially available xylitol is produced by the industrialized process of sugar hydrogenation. In order to hydrogenate anything, a catalyst is needed, and in the case of xylitol, Raney nickel is used which is a powdered nickel-aluminum alloy.

xylitol...KILLS. In dogs, its drops their blood sugar to dangerously low levels which causes the brain to swell, seizures, coma and death. Additionally, renal failure. This happens quickly, within an hour, so emergency treatment is key to your dogs survival. Keep this sweetener and any candy or gum with this sweetener away from dogs. Or even better, just don't buy it.
