Grannies in La Paz live together and are cared for by Comunidad de Aymaras Urbanos de Pampajasi (CAUP). A part of the housing and food costs is payed from the proceeds of knitted fashion. The grannies themselves make traditional designs. The younger women from the neighborhood produce modern fashion.
The public voted for their favorite submission in the 2013 CGAP Photo Contest and chose "Talented Nesma," submitted by Mohamad Gouda of Egypt, out of nearly 4,000 entries from 91 countries. The photo received 1,236 votes, approximately 400 more than the next most popular photo. The photo depicts a woman working on embroidery who funds her business through #microfinance.
