Nanking Cherry is a medium to large, multi-stemmed shrub from China that produces small, shiny, red berries with a juicy, true cherry flavor – it is a true bush cherry. It can produce in almost any growing condition, tolerates some shade, is very resistant to diseases, tolerates drought, and because it is much smaller than a full cherry tree, it is easier to protect the tasty fruit from hungry birds.
Temperate Climate Permaculture Plants: Nanking Cherry (Prunus tomentosa)

This is brilliant. The pre-fab Groundfridge will store as much as 20 refrigerators underground without using electricity. I won't give up a refrigerator in the house, but this would be great to store supplies for a long winter!
Nice clean design idea! But cellars have cooled without electricity for centuries.

The initial phase of the world’s first commercial demonstration algae to energy plant is now operational. After beginning construction on the demonstration plant in Columbus, New Mexico back in 2011 at a cost of $135 million, California-based Sapphire Energy has successfully harvested 21 million gallons of algae biomass from its first ponds that were first [...]

Will algae ever power our cars? Scores of companies across the world are racing to unlock algae's energy potential and create a 'green crude oil'
Earlier this year, Sapphire Energy began producing oil on its 300-acre algae farm in Columbus, New Mexico. By next year, the company hopes to produce about 100 barrels a day at the “green crude farm.” A host of startup companies are pursuing new technologies that they claim will soon lead to large-scale commercialization of biofuels made from algae. But questions remain about the viability and environmental benefits of what its developers are calling “green crude.”
Growing crude oil as a crop – Sapphire Energy and its Green Crude Farm – can it be the sunlight in your universe and change the world? What does it look like? How does it work? The Digest does the show and tell. As locations go, Columbus, New Mexico is hard to find but is a pretty good place to stage the first attempt, here on Planet Earth, to cultivate crude oil as an agricultural crop.
