DIY Ombre Sugar Hearts We have some super sweet treats for all you Do It Yourself fans made with love by Erica O’Brien Cake Design and Brooke Allison Photography. These ultra stylish DIY Ombre Sugar Hearts could easily be used at a fabulous bridal shower, for wedding favors, as a special surprise for your sweetie on Valentine’s Day or even decor for the cutest wedding cake in the world. What you’ll need Two cups sugar (or more, depending on the number of colors you want), divided 4 teaspoons (or more) egg white or liquid meringue (1 teaspoon of meringue powder mixed with 1 tablespoon warm water) Paste food coloring (found at local craft store) Large cutting board, baking sheet or other flat surface, lined with Silpat or parchment paper and Baking sheet lined with Silpat or parchment paper Ateco aspic cutters or small cookie cutters Additional: Small and medium bowls | spatulas | rolling pin | measuring spoons | measuring cups | ziplock bags | butter | knife Optional: 3 x 4-inch treat bags | colored ribbon | cake to decorate Step 1. Place ½ cup sugar in medium bowl. Add a small amount of paste food coloring (we used a combination of Wilton’s Rose and Violet), and mix thoroughly. This will be your darkest color. (Hint: A little goes a long way and will darken once liquid is added in next step.) Add more if needed until desired color is achieved. Add 1 teaspoon egg white or meringue liquid and mix thoroughly until the mixture resembles wet sand. Be careful not to add too much liquid or you will dissolve the sugar. Step 2. Empty contents onto Silpat or parchment lined cutting board or baking sheet. Spread with hand or spatula and pat down, then roll over mixture with rolling pin to compress. Ideally, the flattened mixture should be as compact as possible and level, about ¼”. Press heart cutter into mixture and lift up. Place hearts on lined baking sheet. If cutter will not release heart, gently tap with the back of a butter knife. Repeat 10-20 times or as many as desired. If hearts will not hold their shape, add more egg white or meringue liquid in small increments and mix thoroughly. If sugar builds up in cutter, rinse with warm water and pat dry before continuing. Pour remaining colored sugar back into bowl and proceed to Step 3. Step 3. Add ½ cup sugar to colored sugar from Step 2 to lighten. Mix thoroughly. Add 1 teaspoon egg white or liquid meringue. If desired color is not achieved, continue adding additional ½ cup sugar plus 1 teaspoon egg white or liquid meringue and mixing thoroughly until desired color is achieved. Repeat Step 2. Continue with Steps 2 and 3 until desired shades and number of sugar hearts are achieved. We recommend at least three to five shades. Leftover sugar can be stored in ziplock bags for future use. Step 4. Heat oven to 200 degrees. Heat hearts in oven for 10 minutes. Allow to harden overnight. Sugar hearts will be the consistency of sugar cubes. Design Options: Place 10-20 sugar hearts in treat bag. Staple ribbon to bags. Tie ribbon. Can be given as gifts or used as favors. For cake: Attach sugar heats to cake using royal icing. Begin with darkest color on smallest tier. Continue with lighter colors. These sweet and tasty Do It Yourself Ombré Sugar Hearts were shared with us by Erica O’Brien Cake Design and Brooke Allison Photography. We have a little Ombré Wedding Tote in our WC Shop that would be fabulous with the sweets. Click here for more DIY Edible ideas.

Texas sheet cake
Texas Sheet Cakes, Fun Recipe, Chocolates Cakes, Chocolates Sheet Cakes, Meatloaf, Meat Loaf, The Pioneer Women, Texas Chocolates, Chocolate Sheet Cakes
The best Texas Sheet cake from Pioneer Woman. THE BEST (TEXAS) CHOCOLATE SHEET CAKE from The Pioneer Woman CAKE: 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups sugar ¼ teaspoon salt 4 heaping Tablespoons unsweetened baking cocoa 2 sticks butter 1 cup boiling water ½ cup buttermilk (Or use this tip to make a buttermilk substitute: Place 1/2 Tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice in a liquid measuring cup. Add enough regular milk to bring the liquid up to the 1/2 cup line. Let stand for 5 minutes, then use in the recipe.) 2 large eggs, beaten 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla FROSTING: 1 3/4 sticks butter 4 heaping Tablespoons unsweetened baking cocoa 6 Tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 pound (minus 1/2 cup) powdered sugar (about 3 to 3 1/4 cups) 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts, optional (Jane did not use nuts in her frosting and it was great…so if you don’t like nuts, leave them out!) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Melt butter in a saucepan and add cocoa. Stir together. Add boiling water, allow mixture to boil for 30 seconds, then turn off heat. Pour over flour mixture, and stir lightly to cool. In a measuring cup, pour the buttermilk and add beaten eggs, baking soda, and vanilla. Stir buttermilk mixture into butter/chocolate mixture. Pour into 13 x 18″ sheet cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes (if using a 10 x 15″ jelly roll pan, you may need to bake 22 to 23 minutes). NOTE: I greased my pan, but the Pioneer Woman’s recipe doesn’t say to do that, so I guess that’s optional. While cake is baking, make the icing. If using nuts, chop them finely. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add cocoa, stir to combine, then turn off heat. Add the milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar. Stir together. Add the nuts, stir together, and pour over warm cake. (NOTE: if you follow these directions, you’ll notice your frosting is still a little lumpy. To make her frosting really nice and smooth, Jane simply cooked the frosting several minutes longer over low heat, stirring until the mixture was smooth; she also omitted the nuts. You could also leave the nuts out of the frosting mixture and sprinkle them on top of the icing instead). If you made your cake in a 13 x 18″ pan, pour on all the frosting–you may need to spread it a little so it covers the entire cake; if your cake is in a 10 x 15″ pan, just pour enough frosting on to cover the surface of the cake without going over the edges of the pan. You’ll probably have about 1/2 to 2/3 cup of frosting left over. You can let the frosting cool and set before cutting into squares if you want, or cut into squares while it’s still warm and dig in! The frosting will start setting in about a half hour, but it needs between 1 and 2 hours to set more firmly; at 2 hours, it should be nice and firm.
Best (Texas) Chocolate Sheet Cake. I was told this was the best chocolate cake ever! I have got to try this one! Thanks Bill!

Homemade Granola Bars... Pinners say: My boys eat these daily!! One Pinner said "I made these! Okay, these are going to be hard to beat. The kids say they love them more than the Trader Joe's granola bars I buy. They are simple and fast to make. LOVE these and so will you. Recipe only makes about 10 bars so you're going to need to at least triple the recipe. By the way, great for summer since you don't have to bake these!"

Strawberry Angel Food Trifle (1) store-bought angel food cake 24 oz. container frozen strawberries, sliced with sugar added, thawed 24 oz. or 3 cups vanilla pudding (We used 6+ small individual cups this time) 16 oz. container of whipped cream, slightly less than the whole container Fresh strawberries for garnish Tear angel food cake into medium pieces. Begin layering cake, strawberries, pudding and whip cream in a large clear glass bowl. Continue irregular layers, filling the bowl. Top entire dessert with a solid layer of whip cream. Slice a few fresh strawberries for garnish. Refrigerate overnight or at least 4 hours before serving. To me it tastes like all the flavors of strawberry shortcake in one big yummy bite! I think it would be GREAT to add blueberries to this mix too. Or nanners. Maybe kiwi? However, I’ll first need to find a purty bowl like mom’s. Hint hint.

"A calm jar. I need one of these. You fill the jar with colored water and glitter. When you are upset you shake the jar and have to watch it until the glitter completely settles. The time it takes is enough time for you to settle your emotions."

"Mind jar aka calm down jar"-shake the jar and the child has to watch it until the glitter settles. Great idea for calming down kids! Or an alternative to using "time out".
The Calm Jar. (Colored Water with Glitter) Shake it when your mad and watch the glitter settle to the bottom. It gives you time to calm your emotions down. >>> Great idea!!! Slightly different then the time out one, not timed, they can play with it.
create a glitter jar as a "time out" to calm down a crazy kid. shake jar, take a time out to watch glitter settle and then resume
A 'calm down jar' - shake the jar and the child has to watch the jar until the glitter settles. great alternative to using 'time out' as calm down time. GREAT idea - gives them something to focus on. I'd use plastic though because glass + my kids = disaster.
