Crawford about 1927. She learned the ropes and had an indefinable something on screen that gave her star quality. She credited this to paying attention, being dedicated and grasping each and every opportunity that presented itself. Early on she determined to become a good actress and credited doing so not only to actors and directors but to lighting technicians and grips.

Joan Crawford from Rain (1932) born Lucille Fay LeSueur, was an American actress in film, television and theatre. Starting as a dancer in traveling theatrical companies before debuting on Broadway, Crawford signed a contract by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1925. Initially frustrated by the size and quality of her parts, Crawford began a campaign of self-publicity and became nationally known as a flapper by the end of the 1920s.

Norma Shearer~(another Canadian born in Montreal) was dubbed the “First Lady of the Screen” by MGM because of her marriage to Hollywood producer Irving G. Thalberg. She was considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind" but turned it down believing the movie would not be a success!
