The ocean at the end of the lane by Neil Gaiman. Dark creatures from beyond the world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and menace unleashed - within his family and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it. His only defense is three women, on a farm at the end of the lane.

The King: The Bowers Files by Steven James, http://www.amazon.com/dp/0451239784/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_FbAMrb057CGNC
As always, the plotting and pacing are brilliant; the questions raised and themes explored are poignant; and the relational aspects are well written. Steven James is one of the best storytellers out there and Patrick Bowers is one of the best fictional detectives. This may well end up being my favorite book of the year.
As with all the books in this series, "The King" is fantastic. It's more of a thriller than a mystery, but still has the familiar feel those familiar with this series will appreciate. Great book and can't wait for "Checkmate" next year!

One of my favorite Holocaust books
The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy. A dark fairytale for adults. May be an interesting read.
This riveting retelling of Hansel and Gretel, set during World War II, is both masterfully crafted and terrifying. While the story is painfully violent, it really opened my eyes to the atrocities that took place during the Nazi invasion of Poland.

still feeling scared hours after reading this book. i think that means it was good? gone girl by gillian flynn. a must read for suspense seekers! (beware language)
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. This thriller about a marriage gone toxic was the book that everyone you know took to the beach this summer—and this best-seller lives up to the hype. “This is not the kind of book that sits on your bedside table unread,” said Emily Bazelon in the September Audio Book Club. Instead, it’s a book that readers refuse to put down—and that wraps them up in its seductively corrupt worldview.

A Land More Kind Than Home: A Novel by Wiley Cash (Goodreads Author) A faith healing of an autistic child by a snake-handling preacher ends in tragedy: The boy dies in front of his little brother. The resulting investigation stirs up small-town secrets in this Southern gothic tale. Goodreads Author Lydia Netzer calls it a "quiet whirlpool of a novel that will pull you under and hold you fast...so deftly constructed you'll forget you're reading a book and not just listening to the characters.

From the first explosive pages, a mystery is presented of a naked toddler, drugged and stuffed into a suitcase, discovered barely alive at a Danish railway station by a nurse. Rather than expounding on the expected depressing observations about the evils of child trafficking, this debut novel sucks the reader into the frantic search for answers on parallel levels from the perspective of the woman who inadvertently found him, and the mother who desperately seeks him. Hope there's a sequel.
